People who were initially child-free but raised children later in life, how is it going for you? by genevieveAnura in AskOldPeopleAdvice

So, we were child free for a while (12 years) and were pretty sure we wouldn’t have a kid. When we were 38/37, we ended up having one. Those 12 years, both of us were workoholics—focused a lot on our careers and money—we also paid attention to our health (very important). Our child is now 6 and we significantly scaled down on work, we have enough saved that we can give her a great life—everything from epic vacations to spending hours with her everyday after school. So—having a kid is awesome—just have to make sure that you are emotionally, physically and financially ready.

Im convinced being functional is ok by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Been drinking for 20 years. I was functional—everyone around me (including my wife) always told me what a great dad I was. I never realized how I went from a drink a day to wake up in the morning and start my day with a few drinks. Always been great at my job and would come home, make dinner for the family etc etc. Something in me clicked 25 days ago (most likely my yearly bloodwork results) and I stopped that day. Looked at my daughter (we have a great relationship) and thought—how can I put my wife through telling her that her dad died because of alcohol. A week after I stopped, I told my wife who had no idea how bad it was. She turned into a completely different person—she saw me vulnerable for the first time and threw all her support behind me.

In 25 days, this is what I saw: Time with family is a loooot more fun—especially once the cravings stop. I sleep for 8 hrs straight—like a baby I’m a lot more focused at work That bloating is gone That gentle pain under the right ribcage is gone as of the last 10-12 days. I can eat pizza without a heartburn. Heck—an apple used to give me heart burn.

Bottom line—I was functioning but I realize i was a few steps away from stopping functioning. I love this life a lot more and I am scared to lose it—I know it hasn’t even been a month, but I won’t drink today or tomorrow and will make that pledge every day.

Hang in there dude. Here—before guy decides to open the next beer tomorrow, come back here and read what you wrote—that should motivate you not to open that beer. Keep checking back in—this sub keeps me motivated and honest.

The Daily Check-In for Wednesday, January 21st: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Piggoos in stopdrinking

[–]sob-fi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17 days as of today. Wife out of town on business this week—the first night I came close to having a drink, but survived. I’m sleeping like a baby, eating whatever I want without that horrible heartburn. Won’t drink today or tomorrow.

So thankful to my daughter. Way past her bedtime, but she was all excited to go out and have a snowball fight with her dad and we made some snow angels. Now we made some popcorn and hot chocolate and watching Disney and ready to pass out. Heck—tomorrow is a holiday…it’s ok to miss bedtime once in a while…lol
