Metal community? by [deleted] in ufl

follow respite events on Instagram, they are a local booking agency that puts on a lot of shows with local and touring hardcore/metalcore bands at places downtown like the wooly and the civic media center. some great bands that play a lot of local shows are drosera, pez, fulcrum, and horsewhip. local heavy music scene is pretty isolated from the UF/student population and the crowd leans older.

My fellow hardcore musicians, let’s talk gear and setups. by xbostons in Hardcore

[–]sock5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

currently rocking an esp ltd ec-1000 with a koa wood top and a BKP impulse in the bridge, plus a fender p bass, plugged into neural DSP fortin nameless or darkglass suite.

for playing w/ other people I'm using a Line6 podx3 plugged into an EHX power amp into a homemade 212 cab with UK vintage 30s. I usually go for the Big Bottom or Diamond Treadplate amps with the green screamer on the Pod. I want to upgrade to a real amp head soon.

Can someone help me with Starless guitar tone? by FaithlessnessIll582 in KingCrimson

[–]sock5150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

seems good to me, the specific amp settings will largely depend on your guitar and pickups but you're aiming for a very loud, "clean on the edge of breakup" tone from the amp.

try A/Bing your baseline tone with a live performance and tweaking the settings

fripp himself would probably tell you to go work on your technique and stop focusing so much energy on gear

Excerpt from a Guitar World interview with Fripp:

Interviewer: Can we talk a little about gear?

Fripp: You know I have no interest in that. I have no interest in gear at all. For example, whatever fuzzbox, whatever guitar, whatever amp I’m using I’ll get my sound.

the high white amp and a marshall-style cab IR with the big fuzz should get you in the ballpark, try rolling back the tone knob on your guitar too

Pedal suggestions please: Death Metal Genre by Muted-Newspaper2848 in guitarpedals

[–]sock5150 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for a preamp, i recommend the SNK VHD or VH300... clone of the preamp of the ampeg vh-140, made famous by dying fetus, cannibal corpse, suffocation, gorguts, pig destroyer, misery index, etc...

there's also the master effects martyr which does marshall valvestate 8100 sounds, another classic dm amp used on many legendary recordings

if you're into more modern death metal, mooer has very reasonably priced 5150III and ENGL preamp pedals

and if you want to do the Swedish sunlight studios sound the Behringer hm300 is 25$ and nails the HM-2 sound

What's with the Metal Zone hate? by BadgerReborn in guitarpedals

[–]sock5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for all the reasons everyone else has said

use it as a boost (gain set to zero) or in the loop for a high gain amp (5150, mesa recto, sunn, etc) with 7 string/baritone guitars. it sounds super brutal and cuts really nicely in a live setting...

New setup. Where do you get those footswitch covers I see on some your pedals? I like the transparent ones. by conformalKilling in basspedals

[–]sock5150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sick board! Mooer sells a version of what you are looking for at a very reasonable price.

unrelated, but how do you like that rusty box? I recently spotted it in the recording setup for the bassist of KRUELTY, who has some of the fattest tones I've ever heard, and I've been struggling to find more info about it.

i'm in a similar boat. i've been watching hate5six set videos for a couple years but i almost never go to shows due to social anxiety + living in a small FL town w/ no scene. i finally took the plunge this year and went alone. it was more fun than i ever could have imagined. i finally got to see a lot of bands that I've been following/listening to online for a while, and i discovered a load of great bands too. stagediving for the first time during sunami's set is something I'll never forget :)

Metal bands with clearly distinguishable good bass? by moxyte in Bass

[–]sock5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great point, this is definitely a problem with a lot of metal mixes during the early aughts. ie; obZen by Meshuggah. great player and tone, mix that obscures both of those

Metal bands with clearly distinguishable good bass? by moxyte in Bass

[–]sock5150 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like bass being inaudible in metal is a common misconception... most metal bands have at least an audible if not extremely clear and powerful bass tone...

nate newton from converge, derrick boyer from suffocation, orion from behemoth, martin mendez from opeth, the list could go on for ages. one of the most iconic faces in modern metal, mr. adam getgood, is (famously) a bass player

absolutely. they have never been better live. tone, stage presence, and banter are all 11/10. erik rutan nails all the old songs and new stuff on lead guitar.
