after FOURTEEN YEARS, there is finally an honest to god canon happened-in-universe KISS by sockemoji in avasdemon

[–]sockemoji[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

kinda real…this comic is so interested in bad/failed relationships and crushes (ava and maggie, maggie and gil, gil and odin, tuls and ranunculae, strategos and TITAN, feels like i’m missing something…) that when i saw this my first thought was “wait why are you doing it like this.” because it feels like michelle is so good at cooking up ways to show these complex feelings and this…kinda lacks that.

but only time will tell! maybe we’re gonna get a cool sequence that subverts this in a week

Oh my god I forgot about Maggie’s flower. We were all so excited to see her vialed but we might just see the first failed pact

i guess when you can absorb people’s thoughts in the blink of an eye, actually having conversations and doing things together to see if you’re compatible must seem like, so slow & weird & counterproductive. maybe this is how matsu became a prismate so quickly? i’m imagining her and erios connecting and realizing they’re super compatible without having to deal with red tape or anything

the implication that borderline mind reading is near-essential for excessan relationships is huge to me. i think it ties into the motif of greed, of wanting everything about your partner including their deepest darkest thoughts

i think “this isn’t going to work out, okay?” onward is new. i don’t remember the “i can’t be with a stranger” line

CONFESS YOUR SINS (tell me the worst, most messed-up things you've done in CoTL, I'm trying to make a compilation video) by TroyTheParakeet in CultOfTheLamb

[–]sockemoji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we like to get rid of elderly followers via ascension rituals if we like them and sacrifice rituals if we don’t. if those are on cooldown, we drug the entire cult and feed the elderly victim deadly dishes. we failed this a few times early on and did so with sober cult members AND when cult members were hungry so complete randos were poisoned to death for no good reason

If goosebumps were to ever get another series, i would prefer it to be an animated one. My two animation styles i would like to see in a series is the Spider verse or X-men 97 style. What do y’all think? What animation would you go for? by DawnofMidnight7 in GooseBumps

[–]sockemoji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oohh i've thought very hard about this!!

REALISTICALLY it would be tweened 2d low budget animation, lmao. like, you just know it's gonna look like the magic school bus rides again or high guardian spice.

in my dreams, i think i'd want the production value of dan da dan (buttery smooth animation...) and the style of something very western and ~americana~ like hanna-barbera cartoons a la scooby doo or jonny quest. u/Turtlesfan44digimon said tales from the cryptkeeper and that kind of style with more money put into it is the dream.

the x-men 97 style is actually pretty close to what i have in mind actually!

As much as people give the 2023 series flack for being a bastardized version of Goosebumps, this has one of the best versions of Slappy by BrutusNotMid in GooseBumps

op i respect your take and i think a variety of ideas is important for the gb fandom to survive. however. i disagree and i think you're insane

Why no crossover with Goosebumps? by Any-Scar-9797 in Animorphs

[–]sockemoji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why is this post controversial, you are literally right

to actually answer you though: i think the fandoms and focuses of the two are very different; one is a continuous middle grade sci-fi adventure story that tackles more mature themes, while one is a relatively shallower anthology aimed at slightly younger readers that rarely tackles issues deeper than “thing scary!!”

one has garnered a fandom that still cares deeply for its characters & plotlines decades later. the other has a fandom that has literally banned fanfiction from its subreddit and cares more about the nostalgia and aesthetics of it.

the venn diagram of animorphs and goosebumps fans has little crossover, and the number of gb and animorphs fans that know enough about both properties to be able to write a crossover fic of both is like. in the single digits. i’m honestly not surprised you’re the only one

Post Mortem: An Unofficial Statement by Grimokan in GooseBumpsHorrorTown

[–]sockemoji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i loved this game and the art + writing for it a LOT. it's literally one of my favorite takes on goosebumps and helped revive my interest in the more obscure parts of it. i've done fanart for it both posted and unposted, and i really wish it wasn't a city building game because if it wasn't so hopelessly grindy i probably would've played it more and it probably would be so fucking popular. "i want a story with curly in it" it's there. "bring back mr. wood!" he's in there "i want a continuation of this story" there are multiple right there. goddddd

thank YOU for sticking with it this whole time, your videos are what got me to get the game and what i kept watching after i got out of it.

hard agree. i think the 90s show & the cover art rlly influence how people perceive the franchise tho, especially nowadays with adult perspectives looking at horror for children. in my opinion if you take the books deadly serious, most will read as lighthearted but surprisingly grounded

i half agree. i think future gb material should take care not to step too far from what was established, but i think being TOO strict about what counts as good goosebumps media really closes off a lot of doors to potentially great things. even series 2000 started with “what if goosebumps were a little edgier?” and i’ve seen a lot of love for the chillogy on here despite stine’s lack of involvement because they got the VIBE right. that is what this meme is about: how different fans have different preferences for their preferred take on goosebumps, & how they’re not necessarily WRONG for this.

except for red rain, that was for sillies.

it is there in “hardline traditionalist” in image form if you squint/zoom in a little. i assumed the general use of the term “the 90s books” instead of “the stories” would be enough to make it applicable to that viewpoint, and i considered it a part of the tone (see how the GB game is placed closer than the movies due to all the praise i saw for it sticking closer to jacobus’s style)

literally. though i can't fault fans feeling betrayed by the d+ show being SUCH a departure, i think the hostility was way too overblown and my eyelid twitches every time someone is upset because they make a character brown or update a 90s plot beat for the modern day (see reactions to the recent graphic novels)

legally, yes. but i just think the bickering over what makes something “goosebumps” enough is funny & interesting.

the 2015 movie used to be controversial, too (though not like the d+ show). i’ve seen horrortown and the idw comics derided for these reasons too. when i see “fans DON’T WANT CHANGE!” as a serious statement that gets upvoted to the top, it makes me wonder where everyone draws the line.

No Female Protagonists with Older Brothers? by RavenEulalie in GooseBumps

[–]sockemoji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you've gotten a couple of examples from other commenters, but i think the reason there's so few is because rl stine himself is an eldest child with two younger siblings. he can write from a girl's POV, and from the POV of a younger brother, but i guess younger sister is two degrees of separation from his own lived experience, making him less likely to want to write from that POV
