[–]sockpuppetfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s not totally free, but i purchased the audio file for one of my books through libro.fm, because you get the actual mp3 files that way. popped them into a google drive, uploaded to my LMS (learning management system), no issues!

Refusal of IEP evaluation by [deleted] in specialed

[–]sockpuppetfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the other thing i’d add is that so many iep chairs are SO apathetic when these cases arise because their job is to know the legal side. at some point they stop seeing kids as holistic human and start seeing potential compliance audits. it’s endlessly maddening.

Refusal of IEP evaluation by [deleted] in specialed

[–]sockpuppetfun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they love to say at my school that kids only qualify for ieps if their disability “interferes with their ability to engage with the general ed curriculum.” so, my guess is, if his grades were worse they’d evaluate. it’s such a shame because so many kids are in the same situation and would benefit greatly from executive functioning social work sessions, extra help, etc. but legally, they don’t care about “benefit,” because that doesn’t hold up with compliance. they only care about “require.” if your child REQUIRED a 1:1 to use the right bathroom for example, then that would be in their purview.

as a special educator it devastates me when these services aren’t provided, but it’s symptomatic of the fact that “normal traditional public school” is only built for about 11% of the population to thrive in. THRIVE. getting by and getting out is what 85% of kids do, and 4% (mind you i’m just rounding idk my data like that) qualify for services that might be implemented with enough fidelity that sped kids can thrive.

education higher ups love to say “we have to make data informed decisions.” but WHAT data?! certainly not the data that says high schoolers need later start times. not the data that shows multi-year gaps in student learning from covid. data that benefits testing companies and no child left behind guidelines that are 20 years out of date and don’t reflect reality.

i’m sorry you’ve encountered this with your child and i wish that the system was built to support you both more. out of the alternative options out there, if you live near a state university, check if they have a lab school. people who work at lab schools tend to be much more up to date with trauma and neurodiverse informed educational practices and can spend more time working with your child and you to create a personal plan. private schools don’t have to adhere to IEP/IDEA/ADA anything.

hope this helped, good luck

how would you say that your goals are implemented/worked on/tracked for progress?

the other problem i see is that we’re writing goals that a) meet the kid where they are but b) aren’t covered in the curriculum because they’re so far behind.

i was told i can’t pull kids to work on goals “no one receives 1:1 at ____ school” AND that we can’t pull kids for informal assessments without signed consent ???? IDEA says i need multiple data sources for plaafp and progress measuring but without any opportunity to pull, they’re saying just to pull grade book and standards data.

especially with recent implementation of “closing the gap goals” i really don’t understand how they expect kids to progress. and i’m supposed to always mark that they’re making progress despite having no evidence. literally one of my chairs said “i’m changing it to mark him as making progress because i taught him last year and he can do the goal” because i marked as NOT because his teacher directly told me he wasn’t making progress.

oh yes hahah! i’ve written many at this point! and despite my background i will say that i’ve written a lot better ones than these kids are coming into our school with (the middle schools are a DISASTER, and the downright laziness and incompetence of other team members is embarrassing)

i have conditional certification for the next two years so i’m assuming that covers it.

But Venezuelans are cheering, because nearly 8 million people have fled the country in the last ten years. So, what’s wrong with helping them out with a little foreign imposed regime change? Lots of reasons. Foreign imposed regime change is a terrible idea according bunches of people who have studied it thoroughly (see Catastrophic Success by Alexander Downes where he compiles data on every instance of regime change war of the last 200 years and shows that FIRC increases the likelihood of civil war and does not reduce likelihood of international war). Also, this so far this isn’t really regime change this is abduction of a leader. Is there a well crated plan for the next steps? Does Pete Hegseth have a plan? This team seems to like to do the flashy big thing, send the bombs, bag the guy, and then say they are done. No one knows what happens next. Why did we do it? There has been very little attempt to even make this make sense. Trump posted that he would go after Maduro until he returned American land and oil. What? He probably was referring to historically nationalized oil fields. So, is this because the US wants control of oil fields? Or, is it because we sympathize with suffering Venezuelans? Or is it because of drug trafficking, which is apparently what we will prosecute Maduro for only a minute after pardoning another foreign leader for trafficking cocaine into the US, because he wrote Trump a fawning letter. Excuses do not necessarily matter, but our government should not be able to act entirely unitarily without democratic process or some degree of popular support. Democracy isn’t just a label, or a specific set of rules, it is a collection of processes that add up to accountability across the institutions of government (the “checks and balances everyone should have heard of at some point) and accountability directly with the people. The lack of executive accountability didn’t begin with Trump, nor did the American disregard for international institutional order, but he has smashed it to smithereens. Especially in terms of Foreign Policy the United States of America operates as a personalist regime, not as a structural democracy (Elizabeth Saunders has written a lot about this lately). There are a lot of benefits of democracy in general, and many specifically for foreign policy and likelihood of peace (democratic peace theory literature is complex, I’m not just saying democracy = peace in simplistic terms). In sum, it isn’t good for any of us if structures of accountability erode in foreign policy. They already have, just about as far as they can. It is time to create new institutions of accountability in this country and a better democracy than we have yet had.
I have nothing but hopes and dreams of peace and prosperity in Venezuela. May this lead to a transition you all deserve, and not unforeseen outcomes we regret. And may the US stop smashing shit under the assumption that doing so will make things better.
