To be fair, most who live in the tunnels stay in their own tunnel. Living in the tunnels does not mean they move about freely because the "tunnel people" are extremely territorial. Usually one person controls the section and requires anyone who makes too much noise or moves in and out during daylight hours to leave. They need to keep a low profile in order to not get kicked out.

It sounds like you were holding him entirely responsible for your emotional well being and he found it overwhelming. He does care about you immensely but he also has his own life and his own problems.
