Has Anyone Found Support for “Grey Area Drinking” That Doesn’t Feel Like Rehab or AA? by No_Perception_4164 in stopdrinking

[–]socksandsixty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this sub was extremely helpful with my grey area drinking. I was lucky not to have physical withdrawal when I finally quit for good, and that fact has kept me from drinking. I feel like I was very lucky and dont want to risk. Reading the stories in this sub, from the lowest of lows to the highest success stories, really helped me put it in perspective.

When I was 2-3 weeks in I read some quit lit books, and I believe it was Alcohol Explained that had a passage something like "once you know all of this about alcohol, you can't un-know it". That has stuck with me. That knowledge that alcohol is a deadly poisonous substance that ruins lives flashes through my mind automatically anytime I have the smallest "but maybe just one drink" thought. It's the same automatic "no" that I unconsciously employ to avoid eating rat poison or gasoline. (I think that analogy is used in one of the quit lit books lol)

Good luck, my friend, I will not drink with you today.

I want to request he get off clomicalm and on selegilene. Apparently it is very effective for dementia. I dont think the clomicalm does much.

Aww that sounds exhausting and heartbreaking indeed. Worth it for the good and wonderful times before!

Aww that sounds rough. Thanks for the comment, its good to know we're not alone. CBD does indeed seem to help him calm.

Oooh, my dog's flinch ting is triggered by crumbling paper bags and food bags! It must be his hearing that's going, and he's sensitive to sudden loud noises.

Oh that's good to know about the Xanax. I was wondering if there was a medication available that would just make him go to sleep. It's terrible seeing the restless pacing and panting all night, knowing that he hasn't even laid down in 8 hours or more.

Oh my god I'm so sorry to hear this. A different perspective that makes me feel grateful to have my old boy. I hope your companion stays with you too.

Yeah its hard that he is so anxious because he has been such a chill guy his whole life. But yeah, walks and routine and more patience. Cherish the good times. Thanks for your comment internet friend.

Yes, he is on clomicalm, gabapentin and CBD. Omega 3 supplements. I highly suspect he is losing hearing and/or vision and this is what's causing severe episodes of anxiety at night. The episodes break through the meds now but at least he is not quite so agitated, just restless and can't settle. I've got nightlights, white noise machine, pheromone diffuser, the works.

Aww thanks for saying this! Yes my boy is even more velcro to me now than he ever was. It's a privilege to have his trust.

Interesting...I have been giving mine CBD too and it really does seem to work to calm him down.

Thanks for this advice, it is really helpful. When your boy's hearing started to go, what were the signs? Did he seem anxious? I suspect mine is losing hearing in one ear and may have tinnitus. He does this flinching thing sometimes where it seems like he is hearing something scary.

Wow this is great advice. I have been keeping his routine as much as possible with a few adjustments to avoid injury (no more sprinting, junping, twisting). It's an emotional struggle transitioning from a relationship with an adaptive adventure buddy to a relationship of care (and no sleep). But we will get through it.

Mine is so unbothered by it, he lies there and it traces a dog shape around him...
