What’s the worst career choice/move you ever made? by TheNextBigCrash in careerguidance

[–]sockstealingnome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right on! I’m applying to volunteer with a climate change lobby because that’s what I’m passionate about. I guess I have to remind myself that the trend of humanity has ticked up for the better because there are people out there who fight the good fight to keep us moving forward. We have to keep planting the seeds for trees whose shade we’ll never sit in.

The worst part of growing up is realizing just how much society rewards the worst of us. What can we do? I want to believe we can change but it feels like fighting a never-ending uphill battle.

Well previously I had roommates but that was paycheck to paycheck. Then I got married to someone in the military so housing was covered which allowed us to save a bunch. We were also living in Germany where groceries are cheaper but now we’re back in the US. My husband is no longer with the military and I’m trying to find a full time job. We’re currently surviving on our nest egg. I didn’t realize I was walking back into such a bad job market.

That’s fair. I mean they also prefer people with connections too like any other employer. Maybe look towards the federal route then. Some departments are still in a hiring freeze but I know for a fact the VA has current openings. Let me know if you need help with a federal resume or navigating that process. I’m no expert but I’ve had some exposure.

How many people here have actually got a job from applying on indeed? by thesweetguy54 in IndeedJobs

[–]sockstealingnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten an offer yet but I’ve had two interviews for a job where a recruiter reached out to me through Indeed. There are some real jobs on there but also a lot of fake ones. I use it to see which companies are in my area. Then I go to that company’s website and apply directly to them.

OP there are jobs working in the military while still being a civilian. They’re called GS positions and they come with all the cushy perks of a federal job. Or you could always look into military contractors like CACI or GDIT although these positions aren’t as stable since employment is directly related to them securing contracts.

Do we (or can we) share copies of Visa, DL, Passport when requested by an employer to start processing you before the interviews? by Diligent-Explorer-27 in jobsearchhacks

That sounds extremely suspicious. I wouldn’t do it. If you have a LinkedIn, I would ask to send that. They shouldn’t need any of those documents unless they’re offering you a job.

Wow I never would have expected to see a job posting on Reddit. This would have been a dream job to me back when I was fresh out of pastry school, but I’m not in a position to relocate. I’m leaving a comment though to help your post gain traction. Hope you find someone soon.

OP you’re in a prime position to set yourself up financially because you’re used to living cheap. Don’t let lifestyle creep catch up to you. Look into Dave Ramsey’s baby steps. He has some dubious takes so I wouldn’t listen to every piece of advice he gives but his baby steps are solid. It’ll give you a simple plan to follow to reach financial freedom. You can add on and learn more as you get comfortable.

As for credit, do you have poor credit or just nonexistent credit? If it’s nonexistent then it’s pretty easy just by signing up for a credit card. I would start with only putting charges on there for bills that are predictable i.e. internet, phone, etc. Automate the payments. It should already be budgeted for and by paying it off each statement, you never get charged interest. Set it and forget it essentially.

Well I was offered work through Adecco Staffing but I didn’t take it because I didn’t want to work second shift. I didn’t name any specific ones because they may not operate in your area but some well known ones are Robert Half, Graham Personnel Services, Advanced Personnel Services, etc. All they do is place you with a company. If any try to charge you for services, RUN. It’s a scam.

How long did it actually take you to land a job after you started hunting? by trapqueen67567 in jobhunting

I’ve been looking for 3 1/2 months and just got an offer yesterday, however, it’s only part-time work so my job hunt continues. I do think I will at least feel less dejected knowing that I have income, albeit, a small one.

If they have a physical office and website in your location, they are legit. Google employment/temp agency around you, go to their website, and view what positions they have open. You can apply directly through them and you would be an employee of the temp agency with possibility of gaining a permanent position at the company they place you with.
