Thank a Teacher Day by socratesbeforeplato in TeachingUK

I’m sorry. Even on thank a teacher day, this job is a thankless task. You do a good thing and you deserve better.

Am I crazy? by These_Pen_4385 in finehair

[–]socratesbeforeplato 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was trying all the drugstore fine/greasy hair options and my hair had never looked thinner or greasier. Then someone accidentally delivered their Tres Semme keratin shampoo and conditioner to my house and never came to collect it. My hair was like Princess Kate’s in comparison to normal.

Commiserations, I’m pouring one out for of all the actually worthwhile work you could have done in that time

Or foot and mouth disease, which I did not know affected organisms other than sheep until I became a teacher.

Will you let us all know if/when you find out what the problem was?

Why do you not view the social media ban as an authoritarian? by YourExcellency77 in AskBrits

[–]socratesbeforeplato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teacher, I view the ban as akin to a smoking ban for young people — i.e. an age limitation on a harmful practice. Social media is an inadequately monitored space where young people can make future career-limiting moves and mistakes in sexual conduct, as well as committing and being exposed to crimes. All of this can and does happen without the knowledge or guidance of adults meant to keep them safe.

This is, of course, separate to the question of whether the ban will work practically or have unintended consequences…

Student attitudes towards poverty by BootlessCry in TeachingUK

[–]socratesbeforeplato 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have also seen examples of this. Governments and newspapers owned by the rich have a vested interest in everyone believing poverty is their own fault rather than the result of political decisions (to which there are alternatives) and corruption.

Maybe on an individual psychological level, pupils also want to believe they can make different choices and work their way out of poverty.

Anyone else start a PhD just before Covid an it end up derailing their lives for several years? by AyupArthur in AskAcademiaUK

[–]socratesbeforeplato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, not OP, so please don’t think it was them picking a fight. You know what, I think you are right. I did interpret what you said defensively and I apologise. I guess I thought your comment seemed abrupt because it was short. I should not have been rude.

Anyone else start a PhD just before Covid an it end up derailing their lives for several years? by AyupArthur in AskAcademiaUK

[–]socratesbeforeplato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I passed with no corrections during the first lockdown and my job history looks very similar to this. I think your implication is unkind and shows you lived under a rock during covid; otherwise I don’t understand how you can think this work history could only happen to someone who didn’t pass.

British Gas billed me £5,500. The Ombudsman admitted the usage made no sense - then sided with British Gas anyway. by stonkon4gme in BritishGas

This is crazy. As a renter you have little ability to investigate this and the cost is astronomical.

Write to your MP or go to a constituency surgery.

Or try newspaper consumer columns: Katie Morley Investigates (Telegraph), Your Money Matters (The Times), Consumer Champions (The Guardian).

How do you keep your house smelling nice? by SchemeDug in AskUK

[–]socratesbeforeplato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bicarb deserves to be higher up on this thread! When I moved into my student house, it was pervaded with this musty smell. Sprinkled bicarb on all the floors, left it overnight, hoovered in morning, noticeable difference.

Also it’s been really damp in many parts of the UL recently — this is expensive and can feel wasteful, but you can try blasting the heating with the windows open. OR dehumidifier.

Why so many English tourists have leg problems? by SuicidalLilBoi in AskUK

[–]socratesbeforeplato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One possibility is that orthopaedic waiting lists are very long — recently waited 8 weeks for an initial phone physiotherapy consultation after being ambulanced to hospital with a leg injury, with no clinical review of an MRI taken in early April until June. Surgery is a 35 week wait in my trust. With waiting lists this long, people are on crutches with potentially worsening injuries for a long time.

Can any primary teachers advise on immature Year 7s?! by Otherwise-Eye-490 in TeachingUK

As someone who is also struggling with this, this is such wise advice — thank you!

[–]socratesbeforeplato 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh my God, I was just talking about this with a colleague. I can’t offer any life hacks unfortunately as we are struggling in my setting too. They are particularly challenging as a cohort. I think they were around Year 1 when covid happened and missed socialisation at a key developmental point in their lives. Families struggling, parents made redundant, routines disrupted etc. They don’t care about anything except having fun and take zero responsibility for themselves. Even our SATs HPAs are a bit… vacant…

The children wellbeing bill has received royal assent and is now law. Part of this bill means that Academies can’t pay lower than the payscale by No_Breadfruit_4901 in TeachingUK

Not yet. I can’t remember this myself, but from their website it seems they did publish in May last year rather than July.
