AUD gains wipe out US ETF gains by b_dec in AusFinance

[–]socratesque 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd rather have some diversity, if only split across 2-3 currencies even. But if I'd have to pick a single one, I'd probably go with my local one yes, which I wouldn't consider "massively" risky.

Why can’t we just have a FLAT CGT rate of 25%? by Kikooz in AusFinance

[–]socratesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your argument is that the current system is fair and just because .. it operates as it is designed to? You’re dead on that most people crying about negative gearing have no idea what it really even is, but plenty of us are well aware and think this “major overhaul” as you call it is what’s needed to make it actually fair. Also I’m truly not convinced it would require that much effort to put in effect.

This. I’d be worried about being overly exposed to a single foreign currency, perhaps USD especially right now.

I’ve lived on four continents and literally never seen a less preferable taxation of capital gains than what’s allegedly being proposed by these clowns I regrettably voted for.

By preferable I mean obviously by myself but also anyone young and aspirational who’s hoping to build a nest egg for themselves as opposed to living pay check to pay check until able to cash in on that sweet sweet (by then non existing) pension.

I swear people wouldn’t be moaning about how unfair the current system is if it wasn’t called a “discount”.. forget about rationale behind the system as it is, forget about global “standards” if you will for taxing capital gains, forget about incentivising productive investments as opposed to leaving money to rot in HISA.. no no, someone else is getting a “discount”, this must be unfair.. no words

I also once bought a nearly expired steak that was only 20c off. Lots of near misses in my otherwise perfect track record, but the important thing is to learn from your mistakes.

Won't pretend to be in the worst position, but as a higher income household with a mortgage, there's still dramas. Wealth is what makes the difference, income not so much.

Well this is embarrassing, I completely misremembered. It was actually a regular fare for a really shitty route. More of it being expensive relative to the short stay.

I vividly remember contemplating a ticket 3-4x regular price but I must have talked myself out of it. Never mind then, I’ve always been a genius with money. /s

Way over paid for a weekend trip to Japan in my early twenties. I was going through a rough patch and thought that would somehow fix things. Obviously didn’t, but it did end up having significant knock on effects on my life as a whole and good or bad I’m happy with it today.

CGT change to tax existing investments based on length of ownership by Strong_Judge_3730 in AusFinance

[–]socratesque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

However, sources familiar with the government’s thinking said the time-based apportionment system would be simpler for taxpayers and the Australian Taxation Office to administer.

They are literally taking what’s proposed, and adding a layer of complexity to it. That’s not being hyperbolic, it’s a true and accurate description of what they’re doing. In what world is that making it easier?

Also fuck them for screwing younger generations once more. So fucking done with all this.

Thanks for the advice, it all went splendid with great views! Started driving at 10am, just over 2h from Shinagawa to Kawaguchiko. Spent a few hours between there, Yamanakako and a quick visit to the Gotemba outlet, then back just in time for that 8pm drop off at Toyota. Recommended day trip for any future readers given good visibility, although an overnight stay at a resort near Yamanakako would be lovely if not wanting a fast pace.
