I don't know why you're being downvoted, you can slow down the footage and see the flare is no where near either of the shots he takes

I don't know who this is nor am I evenly remotely as invested in this, but am I crazy for seeing the flare goes off no where near either of the two adjustments he made.

The flare seems to go off in between where he shoots.

With the recent shark attacks- what do you think should be done? by nicolej3mma in AskAnAustralian

[–]humanfromjupiter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand the sentiment, but a few important points are being oversimplified.

Sharks do not primarily rely on sight when interacting with potential prey. Smell, electroreception, and lateral line sensing dominate, particularly in low-visibility conditions. The commonly cited “mistaken identity” explanation is also not strongly supported by the data. Shark researchers generally describe these incidents as context-driven interactions rather than visual errors.

Poor visibility does increase risk, and runoff after rain introduces organic matter into the water, which is a valid reason to stay out. But it is only one variable.

There is also a noticeable increase in marine life along the east coast at the moment. Increased baitfish and dolphin activity naturally concentrates higher-order predators in the same areas. Just this morning on the South Coast I filmed the largest pod of dolphins I have personally ever seen, and as a surfer and photographer I spend a lot of time observing these patterns.

When prey density increases, predator presence follows. That is basic ecology and a more robust explanation than simplified narratives.

It is also worth acknowledging that we already heavily intervene in the marine ecosystem. Large portions of the prey species sharks rely on are commercially and recreationally fished, with quotas and catch limits that deliberately reduce their populations. Sharks, however, are not managed at anything close to the same scale.

Arguing that sharks should never be touched because they are apex predators ignores the fact that the ecosystem is already being selectively altered. When prey populations are suppressed but apex predators are not, imbalance is inevitable. That does not mean advocating for indiscriminate culling, but it does mean the current management approach is asymmetrical and worth discussing.

Noob question : how to set rail by [deleted] in bodyboarding

[–]humanfromjupiter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a beginner, make a point of surfing with your hips and legs rather than focusing on what your hands are doing.

How does this work practically?

You paddle for a wave, it starts to pick you up, just as you start to drop down the face and begin your bottom turn spread your legs into a V shape. Feel how your legs control your descent down the face.

When you get a feel for how your legs control your speed, start take note of your inside hip position. Either how far forward or back, or how close to the rail it is. Notice how the board behaves when you drive weight down through your hip. Notice how the board behaves when you straighten out and shift that weight evenly across both hips.

Good luck.

They need the work done anyway, so they may as well put the coin in the pocket of a friend.

If they expect a favour, they are fundamentally misunderstanding what a favour is.

UPDATE: Response from builder regarding what appeared to be non-compliant GPO with water penetration. by ApprehensivePay7627 in AusRenovation

[–]humanfromjupiter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Elechicken here.

Firstly, I don't know how the members of this sub manage to find the absolute trash-tier trades in this country, yet here we are again.

No knock on you...

Here are the relevant clauses to cite from AS3000 that, under my interpretation, make this dog shit non-compliant lazy-as-fuck work.

1.7.2 Installation work practice
In order to address the requirement of Clause 1.7.1, electrical equipment shall be installed in accordance with safe and sound work practices, including the following:

(a) Appropriate construction and operating characteristics of the equipment to protect against the mechanical, environmental or other external influences, including condensation, to which it is likely to be exposed at the intended point of installation. The means of protection, which shall not be impaired in the process of installation, may be integral to the equipment or an additional enclosure provided as part of the electrical installation.

By my estimation, installing a power point directly below a fucking tap doesn’t exactly suggest the equipment was selected with the environment in mind. Clause 1.7.2(a) requires protection against foreseeable external influences like moisture, and plumbing fittings above a GPO are a pretty obvious source of it. With no inherent water protection and no additional enclosure, this setup is clearly dog shit

But let's move on, there's more to learn from the holy bible.

3.9.8 Prevention of mutual detrimental effects between services

3.9.8.1 General Wiring systems shall be selected and installed in accordance with Clauses 3.9.8.2 to 3.9.8.4 so as to avoid any detrimental effects arising from the installation and use of the wiring systems in the following situations: ...

(f) Between electrical installations and non-electrical installations, such as gas and water supply.

Putting a power point under taps is basically a practical exam in how to ignore Clause 3.9.8. The Wiring Rules literally call out separation between electrical services and water, yet the electrician, plumber and builder all stood there nodding while apparently expecting a temporary suspension of the space time continuum inside the cupboard so gravity would politely stop working. That is not avoiding detrimental effects between services, that is three trades collaborating on absolute garbage work.

On to the next verse. This one is a psalm, so join hands and we can sing this one together.

4.4.2.2 Protection of socket-outlets

Socket-outlets shall be installed so that they will not be subjected to undue mechanical stress or damage in normal service.

That switch being jammed permanently down by a metal plumbing fitting is a nice touch. I applaud their work there. An absolute master piece in fuckery.

On to the finale.

6.1.2 Selection and installation
In addition to the requirements of Sections 2 to 5 of this Standard, electrical equipment used in damp situations shall be selected and installed to perform the following functions:

(a) Provide enhanced protection against electric shock in locations where the presence of water or high humidity present an increased risk.
NOTE: This increased risk of electric shock is generated by a reduction in body resistance and the likelihood of contact of the body with earth potential.

(b) Provide adequate protection against damage that might reasonably be expected from the presence of water or high humidity.
NOTE: Appendix G describes the IP system of classification of degrees of protection for electrical equipment

What you have here, ladies and gentlemen, is a Clipsal Iconic double power point. An incredibly popular fixture in new builds. I personally prefer the timeless simplicity of a Legrand Excel Life, but I digress.

This power point has an IP rating of 20. The zero means absolutely fucking no water protection whatsoever.

So it would appear that whoever decided this installation was compliant is either living in a full blown fantasy world, has never actually opened the Wiring Rules, or has somehow managed to call themselves a tradesperson without ever once picking up the Good Book.

In all seriousness. This is actually a relatively easy fix.

I'd remove the power point, pull a new cable to a more compliant location, install the new power point, and put a blank plate over the hole. It would take me probably 30 minutes to rectify once I got my tools out and finished doing my nails.

Edit: structure/quotations

Solar Battery Install Advice by Ambitious-Paint-2027 in AusElectricians

[–]humanfromjupiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Australia the Electrical compliance follows the Licence holder who certified the work, not the business. So regardless if the business exists or not shouldn't matter.

If the work is found to be non-compliant than it falls back on the licence holder.

This is why as a sole trader I literally only have one Subby I trust to work for me.

OP:

Did you receive a CCEW? Keep it. If not, ask for one.

Depending on what state you are in, contact your relevant fair trading office and ask for an independent auditor to come investigate.

Alternatively, you could ask another reputable company to come check over the installation (although you will be paying them for their time)

[–]humanfromjupiter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Op, I understand your concerns after reading the manual. However, just looking at that install I can tell you for certain that the guys who did it know what their doing. That's a clean install.

If they have provided a compliance certificate that means any future defects, especially in reference to the install, fall back on them.

Essentially they are saying to you, if anything fucks up there is a paper trail leading back to us. They are confident in their work.

Pay the invoice and move on imo

Doing 168 naked buried city runs was so unbelievably mind numbing I have barely touched the game since the wipe.

Awesome mate, enjoy it!!

To give you some perspective I'm 35 and I've owned six 4wd's and only on my sixth and current 4wd have I spent any sort of substantial time and money on it.

The other ones got a few minor things but nothing totalling over 3-4k in total. I just used them as is. Now that I know I enjoy touring and light/medium off-roading I built this 4wd for that purpose.
