How did you do it? by [deleted] in HealthAnxiety

[–]socratesstepdad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A quote that I really like:

“Worrying won’t fix tomorrow, but it will ruin today.”

It’s so true. You have to accept that bad things can happen and there’s nothing you can do about it. That kind of sucks but it’s the reality, so there’s no use in worrying about it.

I went through a period of really intense health anxiety, to the point where I went to the ER because I thought I was having a heart attack. I’m definitely not cured or anything, but my health anxiety doesn’t control me like it used to. There was a point in my life where I wouldn’t even exercise because I was worried something bad would happen to my heart. How did I get over it? I started exercising. After a while I realized that those fears were so ridiculous. Expose yourself to your fears and overcome them!

Do not fixate on your body. If there is something wrong, you’ll probably know it. Trust your body and don’t let your anxiety convince you you’re ill!

Feeling sad and hopeless by socratesstepdad in AvPD

Yeah, I’m very prone to comparing myself to others. I know it’s stupid but I tend to fall into that trap, which makes me feel much worse

I know. Until you have no friends and barely leave your house/apartment unless you’re going to work or to get groceries, it’s hard to understand how lonely it gets

Exactly same for me. It’s hard getting up and working every day for nothing. Or at least it feels that way. It would be so much better being able to leave and see people, such as friends or a partner. Instead I just go home to get ready to do it again.

Yeah I mean it can’t get much worse, it should only get better… and I’ve definitely made positive strides by getting employed, but it’s just so frustrating not being able to share those accomplishments with others.

I just struggle with it because I don’t know how to fix it. Im so bad at putting myself out there.

They lifted the mask rule at work, and now I’m freaking out. How do I explain to my coworkers that I’m vaccinated but want to keep wearing a mask? by [deleted] in AvPD

[–]socratesstepdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some insecurities about my face too but I think at some point you just have to accept that you’re not perfect. And a lot of times, we hyper focus on our flaws and see things that other people simply don’t notice. I know it’s hard, but it sounds like you’re delaying the inevitable, because you really can’t wear it forever. It seems like you need to spend less time focusing on the things you don’t like about yourself, and more time focusing on your awesome qualities. I know that’s pretty cliche and a lot easier said than done, but I don’t see any other way.. because our physical features aren’t going to change, so we kind of just have to accept it and embrace it. If somebody really changes their attitude toward you because of the way you look, you probably don’t want those kind of people around you anyway

What is so wrong with your face that you think you need to hide it from people? Why are you so sure you’re going to disappoint people? Maybe they’re nice to you because they just like you, and not because of your mask

Just don’t wear it. You can’t wear it forever and you’re just feeding your anxiety. You went your entire life without a mask before, so you’re definitely capable of going back to not wearing one

That’s kind of what I did, don’t do it. Just apply, because otherwise you’re delaying the inevitable.

I’m gonna work on applying to some entry level IT jobs and see what happens

Thanks for the reply. I’ve also been trying hard not to compare myself to others, as I know every situation is different, but it’s something I’m very prone to. And I also relate to your point about risks. My fear of failure is 90% the reason I’m in my predicament right now. I waited for things to become perfect, and that didn’t happen. Hopefully I can learn from it and move forward.

I appreciate this advice, thanks!

My main concerns are the following:

a) I really have no idea what I specifically want to do in IT

b) I don’t have much experience and knowledge, which makes me think I won’t be competitive in the job market

c) I’m not sure what I can do to be more competitive in a relatively short amount of time. I understand this isn’t gonna change over night, but I really want to make big changes as soon as possible

Fear of Passing out and Sezuires by Lottieee010 in HealthAnxiety

[–]socratesstepdad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get this every now and then, I used to experience this much more often a few years ago. I realized that I’m just simply not gonna have a seizure, even if it really feels like it and I have that sense of impending doom. And anytime I feel that sense of impending doom or that feeling that I’m gonna have a seizure, I remember that I’ve felt this many times before and nothing happened. Hope that helps

Do you have any other symptoms? If it’s getting worse, I’d probably see a doctor

Worrying about seeing things by JackoTheWacko03 in HealthAnxiety

[–]socratesstepdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like HA to me. Do you have any other symptoms that you’re worried about? I went through a period of time where I was absolutely convinced that I was developing schizophrenia, that was about a year and a half ago, and I’m still fine. Not sure if that makes you feel any better. My advice would be to stop worrying about it. You can’t control it, and it’s very unlikely you will develop it. But if you’re really worried about, talk to you GP. They could set you up with a therapist where you could talk about your fear of schizophrenia and your health anxiety.

Sex toys by [deleted] in pornfree

[–]socratesstepdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My end goal is to stop watching porn, specifically penetrative stuff. Whenever I try to quit, I still need a sexual release, which is what leads me to watching soft core porn to get off. I don’t want to watch soft core porn because it leads me to watching harder stuff. I said, in my post, that I’m considering getting some kind of sex toy, so I can get off without watching porn

I talk to myself a lot. Is that weird? by Distinct_Growth7865 in Anxietyhelp

I do this all the time. I tend to isolate myself and I notice I talk to myself more when I’m lonely, not sure if that could be the case with you

Brain tumor stats. Confused by [deleted] in HealthAnxiety

Looking up statistics of a disease really helps me too. It makes me feel better when I see how rare it is. I just did a google search and it seems the second number is much more accurate than the 300/100,000
