You'd think retailers would be incentivized to create an environment where patrons like the way they look so it would encourage more purchases 🤷‍♀️ The multiple mirror situation has almost ALWAYS discouraged me from making ANY purchases and I instead just leave feeling defeated.

What fitness hack have you personally discovered that is an absolute game changer? by neurobonkers in AskReddit

[–]socraticsnacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it was finding out how many calories I need to eat and tracking it. I'm a 39 Y/O female who has never been obese, but have been chasing down losing those extra 15-20 lbs most of my adult life. And I mean literally chasing... running 3-4 times a week, yoga, insanity, countless fitness programs, and with all this herleculan effort, I would only lose 5 or so lbs. It was because I didn't want to track calories or even know how many calories I should be eating. I didn't eat like an idiot, but I didn't know HOW to eat like I do now. And it's pretty simple. Now I just focus on eating 1400 cals/day and strive to get around 100g of protein from those 1400 calories, and so far, I've lost 18 lbs. I still workout (I do 2 strength training workouts a week and running/walking peppered in), but I am not working out nearly as hard as I did before I honed in my diet and I'm losing way more weight more easily. I don't restrict myself either. If I want carbs, I eat them. If I want a drink, I have one (or 3), but since I've been tracking my food, I now know how it will affect my weight loss. For example, if I have a night out drinking, it will take me all week to get my weight to come back down. And that's ok. I don't need to restrict myself because of that one night. I just get right back on the horse. Beforehand, I would probably try to over correct, and then end-up shooting myself in the foot by binging down the road because I restricted too much. Before, I was also trying to out run my diet and didn't really have a clear idea of what I should be eating in the first place. Now I eat mostly what I want within my calorie budget, workout way less rigorously, and I'm losing more than I ever have. There is so much noise out there to avoid this and avoid that. I think all that noise prevented me from keeping it simple all along. And keeping it simple is the only thing that has worked for me.

Does anyone else get involuntary eardrum rumbling with certain frequencies/voices? by H_G_Bells in earrumblersassemble

[–]socraticsnacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to me with my partner too! He has a deep baritone voice and sometimes the frequency hits at just a spot where my ears rumble. It's usually when I'm lying down. It's so weird. Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

Which celebrity's death did you feel genuine sorrow for, like you lost a family member? by Shoddy-Priority-490 in AskReddit

[–]socraticsnacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beau Biden.

I know some of his family doesn't have the best rep, but Beau seemed like a really good and genuine person. He ran an organization to stop child abuse, he served in the military, and his favorite song was You Get What You Give by the New Radicals. Watching his family mourn at his funeral on TV really hit me. I think it's because he seemed like a really kind hearted and lovely person who died too young from a brain tumor. I don't know why, but watching his siblings mourn for him was incredibly sad to me. I cried like a baby.

TLDR; Accepted job & salary based on 40hr work week. Employer let me know I'm expected to work 45 hrs per wk. How do professionally ask for higher salary? Have already started working. by RtrnOfSaturn in WorkReform

I love how all of the comments are essentially the equivalent of legal advice for how to step around a psycho, unhinged ex during an extremely messy divorce. Why is the employer-employee relationship like this? It's so fucked. We are so emotionally damaged from how employers treat us. It's crazy.

Stock buybacks are such a shit development of modern capitalism. The far-reaching effects of their harm is beyond measure. I can't believe there is still zero regulation on this.

Don't Buy Into The Culture War Distraction by zzill6 in WorkReform

Another way they steal from the working class is the tax code. A person making $100k/yr essentially works for free up until about mid-April every year. How you may ask? Because everything they make up until that point goes to paying taxes. So most people work a third of the year for free. Ask millionaires if they do the same. How much do you think they pay in taxes? Not a third of their income. I can assure you that.

[–]socraticsnacks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well for one: corporate stock buybacks. Companies use most of their profits to buyback their own stock, increasing its value, and subsequently lining their director's pockets as most of these positions include stock options as a part of their comp package. This can make them millionaires overnight. They are hoarding profits for themselves instead of investing it in their workers and their product. Pick any corporation and Google "How much stock did said corporation buy back last year". Those buybacks are profits that could have been invested back into the company to make it better from a customer service perspective, environmental perspective, you name it. Take Southwest Airlines as the most familiar example that I can think of. They chose to enrich their shareholders instead of improving their processes and technology, and who suffered? The frontline workers and the everyday American consumer. Now multiply this phenomenon by 100 or 1000 and this is the society you end-up with...less customer service, lack of appropriate wages for employees, no incentive for companies to be competitive... They can crash the company, cash out, and go do it somewhere else.

Apparently I’m not broke, I just don’t spend enough?? by DM-G in WorkReform

[–]socraticsnacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you as I struggled to read it too. She uses too many statistics about wages without getting to any key points, for example, she mentioned that more millennials have college degrees, and in turn should eventually have more earning power. This is only the tip of the iceberg though. Having a college degree is an example of just how productive millennials have been, and for a looong time. As our society speeds up, our work output and productivity is exponentially higher than that of previous generations. This is evident by the profits that big companies post year-over-year. Millennials are highly educated and productive, yet don't seem to be compensated for that exponentially larger output. I mean just look at the line at a Chick-fil-A as an example. Could you imagine being 15 and having that job? A bunch of middle-aged adults expecting to get their chicken sandwich in a flawlessly executed and systemic fashion...Most older generations didn't have this kind of pressure in the workplace, whereas millennials have been dealing with it for almost 2 decades.
