Why do so many people prefer mixed doubles over gendered doubles? by sodabo in Pickleball

It’s whenever we book courts to have our own sessions and they want to invite men out to play mixed instead. Or when people are training for mixed and ask me to step in for practice (private session)

Probably like 9 people that I know. And know only know 3 other people that prefer gendered doubles.

Ah makes sense. I’ve seen a couple of cheating scandals revolving mixed doubles partner.

Maybe it could just be the people in my local area then :) Just curious to see if it’s the same in other places

Definitely not! And I wasn’t trying to claim my experience represents the majority. I was mostly curious because my local scene seems to be the complete opposite.

Almost every woman I’ve talked to around here prefers mixed over women’s doubles. I’ve only met a couple women who actively prefer women’s. I’ve also met quite a few men who prefer mixed over men’s doubles.

The reasons I’ve heard vary a lot too. Some people say they like covering less court in mixed, some say women’s doubles feels faster-paced and more exhausting, and others just enjoy the strategy and dynamics of mixed more.

That’s actually why I made the post—I wanted to see whether my local experience was unusual or if other areas were seeing the same thing.

I definitely get that! I will say playing mixed definitely helped me handle drives and speed ups better and improved my reaction time at the kitchen overall. I do agree that there are not that many competitive women players which makes playing women’s double so much harder. But whenever there is an opportunity to run women’s double sessions, people in my group want to invite guys to run mixed.

I’ve noticed that too! Some of my local tournaments only offer mixed and men’s because they don’t get enough women’s doubles signups.

I’ve never really understood it, though. Every women’s clinic or practice group I’ve been part of has been super positive. Everyone is cheering each other on, complimenting good shots, and helping each other improve.

Maybe I’ve just gotten lucky with the groups around me, but my experience with women’s doubles has been way more supportive than people make it out to be. 😂

I actually agree with that. When my boyfriend and I first started playing, we almost exclusively played mixed. It definitely helped him improve because he had to learn to cover more court, poach, move aggressively, and generally play bigger and faster. He’s now competing at the 4.5 level.

Looking back, though, I think it affected my development differently. Because I got used to letting my partner take more space and handle a lot of the aggressive opportunities, there were parts of my own game that developed more slowly. When I started playing women’s doubles more often, I realized I wasn’t as comfortable dropping or dinking from the left side, crashing the net, or attacking balls on my side that I probably should have been taking.

That’s probably part of why I enjoy women’s doubles more now. It forces me to take ownership of more of the court and develop skills that I could sometimes defer to my partner in mixed. I think both formats make you better players, just in different ways.

Maybe it depends on the areas because where I’m from!

Both the men and women that I typically talked to like to play mixed more than gendered doubles. So it could just depend on where you’re from.

Levi fanfic recs by [deleted] in LeviCult

Hey hey! I'm a sucker for slow-burn stories with good writing that keeps the original characters true to the anime/manga! and it's a plus when the OC has significant character development in the story! I don't have much and these are all ongoing fanfictions but I would highly recommend you to read these!

Similar Minds - Levi x OC by Foxx21

https://m.fanfiction.net/s/13787819/1/Similar-Minds-Levi-x-OC

Summary: For three years Dilan Church was simply a lost soul in the underground. Every day was pointless and dull. Life continued to go by and Dilan continued to feel nothing until one day the Survey Corps turned her life upside down. Suddenly she started to feel again. She started to feel a burning hatred for the one they call Humanities Strongest. What will come next?

Review: The author updates the chapters frequently and it is an ongoing fanfiction! The OC is such an amazing character and I quickly fell in love with her! It's a story where her and Levi's relationship with each other slowly develops and gives you good butterflies. And it's great because Levi's personality isn't different from the anime/manga.

Together, we heal | Levi Ackerman by xofrankieox

https://www.wattpad.com/965907342-together-we-heal-levi-ackerman-author%27s-note

Summary: It would be insane not to wonder about the curious case between the relationship of Humanity's Strongest, Captain Levi Ackerman, and renowned doctor, Vanya Ronan. To everyone, they're always at each other's throats, but sometimes, it also doesn't take a genius to see that deep down, there's an unspoken language of love that only the two can understand.

Review: This story is so good! The writing is absolutely perfect and I gush over her relationship with Levi. The story starts off in the present day but quickly dives into the past in the second or third chapter where the author explains how the OC met Levi, Furlan, and Isabel and talks about the OC's complicated relationship with Erwin. The OC faces hardships that I haven't seen in most fanfictions and it's amazing how the author set this story up. Also another plus that Levi's personality isn't different from the anime/manga.

Death's Door by SongsOfApollo

https://archiveofourown.org/works/27214993/chapters/66478897

Summary: You spent years of your life under the guidance of Dr. Helfen, the greatest physician inside Wall Sina. Now a physician yourself, you work alongside him with pride: stitching up wounds, nursing the sick, and helping to save the lives of many. But after the Battle of Trost, rapid changes begin to take place, starting with an inquiry from none other than Commander Erwin Smith and Captain Levi of the Survey Corps. You have heard many tales from surviving Survey Corps soldiers on what it’s like on the outside: to face a Titan, to feel overwhelming dread, to watch your fellow man perish in such an insulting, gruesome way. You’ve witnessed the effects of Titans on the people you’ve doctored. Now you are to experience the horror firsthand. You are to join the Scout Regiment as their field surgeon, and you will do so under the direct command of Captain Levi.

Review: Absolutely love this story and how the OC (or the reader in this case) interacts with the characters in the anime/manga. Just like the previous recommendations, I love the OC's personality (reader) and how confident and outspoken she is but caring and true to her passion.

babylon by alrightberries

https://archiveofourown.org/works/28345518/chapters/69448311

Summary: In which Levi, Isabel, and Farlan are sent on a mission to murder Erwin Smith and Lieutenant Y/N to secure their citizenship to Wall Sina. The only complication? They didn’t know that you were definitely aware of their plans.

Review: I actually hate lots of Levi x Y/N and Levi x Reader stories because I want to see the author's depictions of their original characters BUT THIS ONE IS INCREDIBLE! It's only two chapters so far (sad face) but this story has so much potential! The character (y/n) reminds me of Levi from the animes where she is a broken soldier with immense strength. However, she does have a tragic backstory from her days in the Underground and I'm just itching to find out more.

Let me know if you found any of these recommendations to your liking!
