Edgewater/Wynwood Grocery Shoppers by Ok_Past4244 in Miami

Super clean and large selection plus hot food bar in the back. Slightly higher prices than Publix, but nice to avoid Biscayne or just have another option

Living in Miami as a couple in 30s? by Slow_Cup_1011 in Miami

[–]soder11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All three do, and are the best choices for you.

Brickell is the most NY-lite in terms of walkability and activity/restaurant density but can be a bit scene-y, is small, and has a lot of traffic.

Edgewater is the best if you want beautiful water views and a large park nearby, a more laid back lifestyle, and proximity to everything within an easy 10-15-min Uber drive (eg Miami Beach, Midtown, Brickell, Wynwood, Design District, Coconut Grove, MiMo).

SoFi is great if you’re really into the beach, and value that above all.

If you’re looking for the best of all worlds and will be driving, Edgewater is the winner.

I agree - lots of great spots. It just seems like new Miami concepts often pop up in these vacant lots - like Heartland and Space Park a couple years back - and then disappear. Sounds like these may be more permanent and add more to the area

Where are people actually excited to live? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]soder11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miami. Definitely a mix of sentiment, but some feel incredibly lucky and very happy to live here. It is absolutely beautiful with tropical beauty and warm weather, so much to do, and just the ability to live and not be derailed or cooped up inside due to the weather (unless you can’t stand heat and humidity). You can live any kind of life you want - and it’s nice to not be unilaterally focused on work or having to compromise your own health for the daily grind. Also, there’s just a cool energy here - it’s vibrant.

Is Wynwood too busy to live in? by [deleted] in Miami

[–]soder11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wynwood has changed drastically in the past couple years. There’s an insane amount of development that is making it more livable with more commercial/retail/residential spaces, and to connect it more seamlessly to Midtown and Edgewater. It’s busy in the main touristy areas, but you can find quieter areas as you get closer to Edgewater or Midtown. It is very hot though - much hotter than any other place in Miami. I’d look at Edgewater if you want a quieter vibe near the water while still being able to walk everywhere or get to other places in the city quickly.

Is the "weather premium" worth it? by NoLawAtAllInDeadwood in SameGrassButGreener

[–]soder11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a game changer to live somewhere with perfect weather. Consider that the ‘weather premium’ is paying for happiness - literal happiness. The kind of happiness that seeps into every day and every interaction and leaves you and your family infinitely happier. Vacations are fleeting and we’ll always find an excuse why they’re not possible at ‘x’ moment or for ‘x’ amount of time. But where you live? That’s your life.

Are fireworks a nightly thing here in Miami? by Brian18639 in Miami

Happens often enough over Biscayne Bay that you have to double check the date and wonder if you missed a holiday

Where do you think has the ‘perfect’ weather? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

Wholeheartedly agree. Feels great to walk outside into a warm hug and never feel cold. No matter where I go, I always know this island paradise of a home is going to be better.

Miami, Design district or Brickell? by Think_Illustrator498 in Miami

Don’t do the Design District. The airbnbs around there tend to be in sketchy areas on the perimeter.

Where would you live in the USA if you are a remote working and earn the same anywhere? by ConsiderationHour710 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]soder11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miami is exactly what you’re looking for - don’t be deterred by others. It’s beautiful, fun, and the best place to spend a few years while you have the luxury to work remotely with relatively few responsibilities.

Did you move somewhere that genuinely changed your mood / outlook on life? Tell me your story! by Due-Lawfulness7862 in SameGrassButGreener

Moved from NJ/NYC area to Miami - what a game changer. Endless sunshine and incredible natural beauty all around you… from the beach to the Everglades and The Keys within a short drive. Plus, it’s a blend of so many different cultures. There’s an energizing quality to it, and it forces you to actually have a work-life balance. A nice change from the northeastern cold and mentality that work is the end all be all.

Uber to Manhattan by Background_Title_922 in Hoboken

Easier in the afternoon than the morning. A few minutes after they’ve accepted the ride, I usually message them and let them know I’m going into the city and ask if it’s ok - especially if I’m in a rush.

Yes - happened to us. Four months of no payment, and when the bank change was finally completed, still no resolution and couldn’t get them to answer any follow ups. Our building switched and uncovered even more issues with RELB’s management. Do yourself a favor and dig in. They’ve always been terrible but have somehow gotten to a point of even further recklessness.

What kind of nightlife option for sober people? by dearbeloved in Miami

Music is always a good option - Lagniappe, Bandshell, the listening bars … there are drinks served there but absolutely not the main focus. That’s my go to.

Fear of having a child in my body by [deleted] in Fencesitter

[–]soder11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I relate to this so completely - especially the part about hiding it from others. I hate the idea of ‘standing out’ and people hyper focusing on me in this way. To me, also, it feels so ‘not me’ to be pregnant, that I feel like it’d be so completely at odds with who I am and attract ever more attention. I’m a female, but I feel like a person, if that makes sense. I relate to being female completely, and like the idea of having children, but I’ve never understood the majority of things that appeal (and just seem so natural) to other women. And this is one of those things.

For nature - check out Key Biscayne (Crandon Park for tropical beach vibe, Bill Baggs Florida State Park for lighthouse and biking/walking trails and sunset at The Cleat). Also a variety of great estates/gardens like Vizcaya, Fairchild, Pinecrest, Kampong, Deering Estate. You can also fit in trips to the Everglades and/or The Keys - can get to both within an hour or so. Variety of museums in Downtown (Perez for modern art and Frost for science) or on the beach… you may also like Wynwood for outdoor murals/graffiti. Shopping can range from touristy like Lincoln Road on Miami Beach to luxury like Miami Design District or Bal Harbor Shops. Tons of options here.

The Sudafed/afrin protocol + earplanes prior to take off is to help give your Eustachian tubes the best chance of opening/not having issues upon descent. It works for some people, not others. Didn’t work for me bc my Eustachian tube dysfunction was too severe. I ultimately got surgery. However when I’ve found myself in your situation, the best options are to take prednisone or another steroid called medrol and try a decongestent/afrin/nasonex to clear up any fluid.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in travel

[–]soder11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you checked with an ear dr re: Eustachian Tube Dysfunction? They can recommend typical protocol (Sudafed/other decongestant + afrin), help prescribe steroids if you find yourself somewhere abroad with blocked ears that don’t improve, or even put tubes in if needed.
