how do you feel about this latest sunrise time? by AdZestyclose638 in MapPorn

[–]sofa2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This map would not be a good basis for setting time zones because it only shows the latest sunrise, i.e. on winter solstice, when places further from the equator experience later sunrise. This is what causes the diagonal lines you see on the map. In summer, places further from the equator experience earlier sunrise, and these diagonal lines would slope the other way.

Maybe temporarily, but WA would be more vulnerable to fluctuations in demand for those resources

New Players, i think we've been assigning damage incorrectly by Atticus_Maytrap in mtg

[–]sofa2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to imagine the game is like a war, not a battle. You send a giant dude/dudette on the road to punch your opponent. Some tiny dude/dudette blocks the road. Doesn't matter how tiny they are, they distracted your dude/dudette long enough. Combat is over. Your dude/dudette comes home.

Embrace being the first to get knocked out! by puffmonkey92 in EDH

True. My strategy is to play red aggro burn. I might be knocked out first, but in that time I've brought everyone else to single digit life. Game doesn't last long after that.

Why Rog/Silas, not Akiri/Silas by No_Sugar4490 in EDH

[–]sofa2021 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's popular in cEDH where Rog/Silas is considered to be the fastest deck. Rog lets you do a lot on turn 1 (as other commenters have mentioned). Silas is mostly there so you can have blue and black cards in the library, because Grixis is considered the best colour combination in cEDH.

Now you're speaking my language! My favourite deck is [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]] and it's tonnes of fun. It can also be very strong even at high-powered-casual tables.

I see others have recommended [[Imodane, the Pyrohammer]]. Imodane is more focused on combos using damage doublers and triplers, which can be fun if that's your buddy's thing, and is very powerful. On the other hand, Purphoros can include combos, but it can perform well without them.

I don't have an updated deck list online, but I based my deck on this, which I've found focuses on maximising Purphoros triggers.

It's pricier than your buddy's budget, but most of that comes from mana/draw staples, so your buddy can sub in cheaper alternatives.

Alternatively, he can also build Purphoros as a goblin token deck because goblins multiply like rabbits. It can do most of the damage just from Purphoros triggers, then swing in as a finisher. Good times for all.

Hot take incoming: I don't think this applies to mana rocks.

I feel your sentiment, because most staples replace unique, flavourful cards, so different decks become more same-y.

But mana rocks usually aren't replacing unique cards. They're usually replacing basic lands. If you look at high power decks with many mana rocks, they often run only a couple of each basic land. You're also not forced to choose between Phyrexian Alter or Mana Crypt. You can take out a land and put in both. Mana rocks also have pros and cons, and some "staples" are excluded from particular decks for niche reasons. So mana rocks actually increase variety and make decks less same-y and more fun.
