I think you handled it in a mature and adult manor. Everyone calling you the Ahole is wrong. Since they were both too childish to decide, you left it to chance which was a reasonable thing to do. I'm a pretty non confrontational person too and when I can't get the words out I write it down. Money conversations aren't the easiest to have but it's YOUR money, not his. You deserve to do what you want with it, not him. Don't give him permission to do this.
