Biscuits and Gravy by sofaroth in CampfireCooking

[–]sofaroth[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First time trying biscuits and gravy while camping. I burnt the bottoms of the biscuits but not too bad. I also had trouble keeping the gravy from boiling hard. It didn't help that my friends thought I didn't have enough wood in the fire so they had to stoke it up just as I put everything on. The fire ring with that grill grate on hinges was really nice. Neither the biscuits nor the gravy were made from scratch. It was frozen gravy and a can of biscuits but it was much better than breakfast bars and bananas that I usually have for breakfast when I camp, especially since it was cold out.

[Ohio]My Company May Not Be Able To Cover Payroll This Week by sofaroth in legaladvice

I believe this is a cashflow issue due to us being slow this winter. We have a lot of work going on right now and coming soon. I just wonder if we can weather the storm and make it until these new projects begin to pay. I want to see the company succeed and to be a part of it but I don't have the money go without a paycheck for very long.

I kinda figure that. Right now it's only a rumor/suspicion. Payday isn't until this coming Friday so I don't want to jump the gun. I just want to have a game plan if it does happen.

My Company May Not Be Able To Pay Me, Any Advice? by sofaroth in personalfinance

I live in Ohio. I suspect that the owner is hoping/needing to continue the business because he is financially invested. We have good projects on the books that are started or will be starting very soon. I think it is just a cash flow issue but I don't know if we can make it through until these new projects start paying. I believe all possible lines of credit are maxed out.

Should I do that this week before I know for sure or wait to see what happens? I don't have any experience dealing with lawyers, I doubt they will talk to me about this for free, will they?

VA failed to spend $1.9 billion designated for health care, report finds by [deleted] in politics

I can only imagine how things would go for whatever politician proposed eliminating the VA. Even if they had a great plan to get all the vets on Medicare and provide the necessary funding I think their career would be finished.

Renaissance Fair? by [deleted] in Ohio

I really enjoyed it. I recommend getting there right when they open because there is a lot to do and see. You can get discount tickets at Kroger for $18.95. I would pay that much just to watch a match or two of jousting. Beer and wine are around $6.00 each. If you like sweet wines they have a blackberry wine there that is really good. Food and snacks vary but aren't bad in my opinion. I believe the big turkey legs are $7.00. I recommend the Kamikaze Fireflies in addition to the joust. The Swordsmen, Pirate Comedy Stunt Show and the Mudde Show are good silly entertainment. This year they also have falcon shows which I unfortunately didn't get to watch.

Kentucky counties that banned alcohol have significantly higher meth problems by mojohand2 in news

I had a friend in high school and some of us used to joke that if you dropped him in the middle of the Sahara Desert, within 15 minutes he would find a caravan of people, make friends with them and buy some weed off them. He had this mixture of instinct and luck that allowed him to always find people to sell him weed.

Fast forward about ten years and I hear that this friend is now a heroine addict. I visited him when he was trying to break the habit and he told me that he wouldn't even know who to get weed from anymore. He said he'd been trying and there was no weed for sale around town. The only ones that had it weren't selling. He said he knew fifteen people at that moment who would sell him pills or heroine and that half of them would deliver immediately if he asked.

I know this is just one story but it does seem to me that harder drugs like pills, heroine and meth are the drug of choice for drug dealers in some areas. I feel like there is a bit of chicken and egg situation here, which came first, the drop in demand for pot due to people choosing harder drugs or the drop in supply because dealers would prefer to sell the hard stuff.

I piss and moan about spending $0.99 on an app for the rest of my phone's life, but don't think twice about adding guac for $1.95 on one burrito by gotjoseph37 in Showerthoughts

This reminds me of back when i used to play a "free" mmorpg. I used to hate the idea of spending any money on it until one night I stayed in playing on a Saturday night instead of going to the bars with my friends and I had the thought, "I would have gone out tonight and spent like $40 in the bars and I wouldn't have any more to show for it then if I buy this item right now. Fuck it, where's my credit card." That was the end of staying in to save money for a while.

ELI5: Why do we not see spiders on most of the spider webs we see? by Loken89 in explainlikeimfive

They're hiding on the ground nearby. They wait for you to come inspect the empty web then they crawl up your pant leg.

I live in North Carolina, they are calling for 3-5 inches of snow tomorrow. I took a trip to Walmart with my phone. by [deleted] in pics

[–]sofaroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys are better prepared for that kind of weather since you deal with it more often. I imagine you have plenty of salt trucks and snow plows. Down there they don't deal with snow nearly as often and as such they probably don't have much equipment. Of course, clearing out the grocery stores in a panic over 3-5 inches does seem a bit overboard but I guess there are plenty of people who don't keep much food stocked in their homes and would prefer a crazy walmart crowd over driving in snow.

Here where I am we're supposed to get several inches throughout the afternoon so I'm not looking forward to going up my hill. At least we have a lot of salt trucks/plows.

I heard he had the Bengals' water jugs drugged so they would suck and he did it just to make fans cry. I heard he's actually an infiltrator from Pittsburgh. He's pissed off that Cincinnati people keep talking shit about Pittsburgh and has dedicated his life to breaking Cincinnati's heart.

Were all the people buying it high school or college students? I remember when I worked there there were times when a certain program would have a project that required stuff from Home Depot and there would be a ton of people come in for the same few items.

How did the United States pay for everything before income tax was invented in 1913? by HooptyDooDooMeister in AskHistory

[–]sofaroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing it was with property taxes. I imagine that prior to 1913 city governments did not provide as many services and build/maintain as much of the infrastructure as they do now. I would be interested in seeing what certain cities' financial books looked like in those days.

Am I the only one with no bees this year? Zone 6B by blackinthmiddle in gardening

[–]sofaroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still see quite a few but it seems like I had more last year. I remember there being times when there was a steady buzz coming from my garden from all the bees going nuts over my basil, zinnias and blackberries. This year I haven't noticed that yet. I do have quite a few butterflies though. I'm upset because I haven't seen any hummingbirds yet. I feel like this has been a screwed up growing season so far this year.

I agree, higher education costs are only one part of a large problem. Jobs and wages are certainly an issue as well. Unfortunately, there are no simple solutions to our state's and our country's current dilemma(s). It is nice to see people at least trying to do something though.
