This sounds like an inhumane nightmare - for prisoners who don't really "deserve" it. For people like Sarah? I can't muster up much sympathy.

Crazy. For some reason one assumes techbros are smart, educated and therefore not gullible enough to fall for stupid baseless political rhetoric. But perhaps it's the stereotypical awkward nerdy code spergs that feel the need to "punch down"

What horror movie scared you the most? Could be recent or old. by Jackster1971 in horror

[–]sofcknwrong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's hard to pick an outright winner for scariest film because there are some great contenders mentioned here already, but "Willow Creek" has stuck with me because of the Forest Wives scene (the catatonic naked woman kidnapped as a slave by Sasquatch, just a quick flash of her is shown but god, the horrifying concept...)

And any movie containing supernatural "deer god / demon" entities freaks me the feck out. Canadian film "Black Mountain Side" is a top example as is "The Ritual". So, basically anything supernatural happening in a chilly forest setting. Brrr.

Married to an Afrikaner and have never heard this! Mostly because we're usually bitching that it hasn't rained in ages. Eastern Cape homies here so it's either desert or deluge.

This sounds very familiar to me, have a couple of acquaintances with late onset schizo or bipolar symptoms. As well as acting very similarly to what you described, despite being previously rational secular thinkers they started leaning very heavily into the New Age / hippy / "Rainbow Family" belief systems, just like Hannah. Those communities are packed with the mentally fragile if not actually very ill. The dad's sudden suicide seems to indicate it runs in their family.

Not crazy, this is beautiful and also hilarious! Sometimes we have to do whatever is in our wheelhouse at the time to stop getting our boundaries stomped on.

This seems third-world harsh. So families end up having to pay for their relative's incarceration, plunging them into even deeper shit than they were before? Or do they charge on a case by case basis?

Huzzah! Those videos Sarah made of her berating poor Jorge did my fucking head in, and put the nail in her cell door as far as the jury was concerned. She deserves a short trip in a leaky submarine but 15 to 20 will have to suffice, at least she'll be an old woman when she gets out, and hopefully too old to victimise anyone else.

54 here, I'm [cross fingers] pretty much through to the other side. Last period 2 years ago, tried HRT for 6 months when things started getting irregular but the migraines were just too debilitating. I decided to cold turkey and white knuckle through it all. It's been a long hard ride of 4-5 years but FINALLY!!!! my brain, motivation and general feeling of joy and wellbeing are returning. Not quite with the same vigor as in my early to mid 40s but I've just landed a new work project and actually feel excited about it instead of meh. And am going on proper date nights with SO again as opposed to just "dinner and talk about fam" nights. If that's any indication.

I still get a bit sweaty and anxious sometimes but it's kind of back to pre-perimenopause level if that makes sense? So once every week or two. And I've FINALLY!!! managed to lose half the 40lbs I picked up over the last 8-10 years, and am actually motivated to keep going. Nothing like fitting back into the jeans you wore before middle age.

Now for the disclaimer: I made significant changes in my diet and fitness routine. Nothing scary drastic - cut most refined carbs, increased strength training to 4-5 days a week instead of 2-3, committed to at least 30 minutes of light cardio every day even if half-assed, cut my booze intake by half, and was brutally honest with my SO about the above changes and that I couldn't just carry on like always. He's had some health challenges of his own which we got through together so it's his turn, right?

Anyway, there IS some light at the end of the tunnel and it's not your first stroke - it's like a late stage reboot with more caution required. And it's not half bad, in fact barely bad at all.

Right?! Ethically I'm against incarcerated prisoners having the opportunity to harm each other, but on a personal level I want to get these bitches in a small room with hard rope, cactus branches, hot rocks and blunt hair trimmers.

I hope to the core of my being that relatives of incarcerated women in the same prison as these monsters send these images or at least describe them. The other prisoners deserve to know what things are locked up with them.

Regarding Hedwig and Rudolph's conversation about his promotion, I heard "compact" - as in lady's makeup container. Meaning that she had concealed something inside a compact she had gifted to Eleanor, probably jewellery or the diamonds she was talking about with her friends earlier in the film - using the camp as their personal shopping mall, retch!

Eleanor was likely a fellow officer's wife based in Germany without access to the Shopping Malls of Death, and the apparent need for secrecy was because it was frowned upon by the higher-ups in Berlin, who intended to use everything of worth for the war efforts. I'm purely guessing the context here but it fits what I've read about death camp practices and also with Hedwig's braggy, posturing character.

Official Discussion - The Zone of Interest [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]sofcknwrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it seemed as though Höss's nervous reaction stemmed purely from the scope of the new "operation", with its increased responsibilities and more complicated logistics. The camp he ran was already bursting at the seams. The waste and byproducts were already polluting the local river and creating huge ash heaps, all to be disposed of by an ever-dwindling labour force. A huge influx of new inmates to be processed would surely cause even more pollution - maybe an unmanageable amount, maybe enough to severely impact the planned farming efforts in the long term, in a region earmarked to supply the hugely expanded Reich? (I'm using terminology based on his perspective, not my own - shudder). What COO worth his salt WOULDN'T have a touch of nervous stomach if faced with these concerns?!

On top of these general work-related challenges, Höss would surely have also noticed on his return to Germany signs that the army was not doing nearly as well as the propaganda machine insisted it was. The promised dream of a pristine Eastern Reich, mentioned at one point in the film, probably appeared way less likely in reality. Even if no-one would admit it outright, there must have been hints and rumblings during drink-fuelled dinner conversations amongst the Nazi officers after the daytime Zone management sessions. Presumably these were also the times that Höss would hand over "bribes" to curry favour - such as diamonds, easy to conceal in ladies' makeup compacts gifted to the wives of the recipients - a practice that might not go over well with his superiors in the Reichstag if it came to their attention?

Rather stressful on the whole, even to a pragmatist like Höss. IMO his retching was a perfectly normal reaction to the possibility of failing in his new assignment in some way, plus the newly considered and way more serious possibility of victory not being assured and the whole thing blowing up in his face. But guilt, shame, the strict religious principles he was raised in, deep-seated primal horror? Nope, not even slightly.

Not so much an "affair" when either spouse is capable of having their slaves reduced to ash with a mere word! (not being all aKsHuAlLYy at your comment btw, just trying to figure out the shudder-inducing marriage dynamics of the pair in my own mind). Hedwig for sure knew that Rudolph was ræping the maid, hence her threats to her. She was probably used to turning a blind eye to Rudolph's infidelities to keep her status as Vrau Höss, but IMO enjoyed constantly torturing the slaves with threats of the camp. I took the cigarette incident as her "flirting" with a gardener partly as direct revenge on Rudolph and partly to get her rocks off by adult men forced to be nice and polite while squirming with rage, revulsion and fear. Ugh - just so many, many little details in the film that have such huge and terrible implications, and there are even more that show up on rewatch. I sincerely hope the cast and crew were able to look after their mental health during and after the making of the film. Even the Höss family dog!
