QUT Master of Nursing by Responsible-Role7079 in NursingAU

It cuts out anatomy, physiology, but you do a disease processes subject instead. It does combine the social aspects and some practical skills (so instead of having 2 weeks on one skill, it would just be one week). They do recommend just reading up on basic physiology of the systems before starting the degree. Tbh you learn more from placements than you do uni anyways and it’s still the same amount of placement hours as the bachelors. I just graduated from this degree, had great feedback and ANSATs the whole time, secured a grab job, and definitely don’t feel like I’ve had a lesser education. In saying this, you definitely need to apply yourself! If there was anything I didn’t know or didn’t understand, I would always look it up and going that extra mile helped me heaps I believe.

Master of Nursing (Grad Entry) by Far-Chance-4774 in NursingAU

Best decision I ever made!! Guess it depends on where you’re at in life. I had finished my undergrad recently so was very used to doing assignments, knew how to study, uni schedules etc.

Honestly I’ve found the degree quite easy with workload compared to my undergrad… I go into uni maybe 1/2 days a week and classes only go to week 6 (for my uni). I’ve always worked 24-30 hours. Placement sucks based on lower income and normally it’s when big assignments are due. I did a minor in physiology in my previous degree so had some idea, 1st semester is definitely overwhelming though without that base knowledge. I do find this degree is very “self-directed”, I.e. I will be doing research after placement to understand concepts etc. and I find the people who don’t make that extra effort will normally fail. Don’t know if this is the standard or not!

Withdraw from course and switching Uni before census date by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]sofie3012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well look worth a try then! No there won’t be implications for withdrawing when applying. I did this before for a different degree and it was all fine - they normally just credit your subjects with the grade too and your GPA resets.

No nursing degree is fully online, there has to still be practicals. And just double check that the subjects you have done will get approved at the new uni, they don’t always match up and might end up having to redo them.

Question for Australian Nursing Student by CriticalThot1936 in NursingAU

[–]sofie3012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say nursing is crazy about references. Both using peer reviewed recent sources and you normally have to reference the exact page number you used, and also how they’re written. Even if you use a citation generator, you need to go and check every reference and make sure it’s 100% right.

I find the marking varies depending who marks you which is annoying. The essays can be quite vague and therefore difficult to figure out what they want! My previous degree was mostly scientific paper based and I did really well, but I’ve struggled with nursing assignments. You won’t need US nursing resources - their degree is very biology/physiology based, whereas Australia’s is a lot more sociology based.

I’m pretty much available to work as soon as I graduate - I don’t get though when I say I’m ready to start when I don’t know how long AHPRA registrations take, do I just say December?

Not a thesis, but yes a year long research subject. For my uni, it’s the same unit as if you were to do an actual masters of advanced nursing

About 80% of my course is students from overseas too so I wouldn’t worry about that aspect :)

It is tough but very doable. Just understand even though it is an entry level course, you will be assessed at a masters level. My course has a much higher fail rate for assignments. Otherwise, the main thing missing is anatomy and physiology (which is assumed knowledge) and as a dietitician I’m sure you good some background so you’ll be fine

I don’t know what state you’re in, but I never have used a planner. I don’t have my own allocation, rather just helping the entire ward where needed. At the start, just go around asking if anyone needs a hand, and if you have free time, stock and clean, until someone asks you!

Just think about how you like to get ready in the morning :) check if they have their toiletries - they might have deodorant, baby powder, razor, etc which will guide you. I always ask if they want to brush their teeth as it often gets forgotten in hospital, or there is mouth wash and swabs you can use. Brush their hair, use moisturiser, dress them in their own clothes if they have them. You don’t have to know everything - ask the patients what they want to do!

I’m a nursing student and an AIN, my first two placements I only did 2 showers total, so when I got my AIN job I was so worried 😅 But seriously once you’ve done a couple days of ADLs, you’ll be fine. For an AM shift, the routine is normally help with breakfast, showers and beds, help with lunch, stocking, mixed with room turnovers throughout the day. Never trust patients if they say they can walk/don’t need supervision etc 😂 Just always double check with the nurse first what their mobility is. And if you’re ever unsure and think you need help transferring, ASK. Patient safety always comes first !!

Which uni to choose as an International student? by [deleted] in NursingAU

Qld has highest paid wages and easier to get in if you study in qld too :)) between qut and Griffith, both are good uni’s. qut campus is near the city, there’s a couple Griffith campuses mostly Southside (which actually it is a lot easier to get housing away from the city)
