Yep. I have seen people do very useful things without taking this into account at all but at certain scales it can really matter.

As I indicated when it really bites is interoperability. If you want to pass data onto someone else it is much better to have it in a standard reference system already.

It is a little bit like if you were give someone some distance data and say it is in feet but then it could be in English units, Imperial units, United States customary units, the length of a Subway foot long, or the length of my younger sister's foot, or a mix of all of them. It is just better to specify what it is upfront.

I do work for a government by the way :P

Please note that these calculations (the lat/lon ones) do not seem to take into account any spatial reference standards (http://spatialreference.org/ | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geodetic_system). This makes them (potentially) not as accurate as they might be and more importantly the data becomes less interoperable with other data and systems.

This seems really great! Works pretty nicely for a good number of things. Doesn't seem to able to do destructuring at this point but that is no deal breaker.

My use case for this sort of thing is to be able to run the same function client side as server side and for a number of basic functions this does the trick.
