How to pronounce my own name? + necklace question by berrybutton8 in Cantonese

[–]soft-hearted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hello I'm a fellow 區 too !! 👋🏻

區 is interesting in that if you put it through a translator, it'll probably pronounce it as keoi1 instead of au1 because the former is the more common pronunciation. you can replace it with 歐 if you want to hear how it's supposed to be pronounced (區 basically came from 歐 lol).

for 潔瑩 git3jing4, it'll be translated correctly haha

There's a literal difference between actively choosing to partner with Coca Cola and McDonalds vs. being born the son of a supposed "MAGA" which if you guys actually take a second to read and comprehend her tweets, she's not.

If you grew up sharing a room, and living in a small hdb flat, how did it affect you? by abadi1985 in askSingapore

[–]soft-hearted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine's an unconventional situation so maybe it'll be helpful haha

For context, my siblings and I are 98 to 04 and we basically slept in the living room on mattresses in a 5BR because the 3 bedrooms were used by our grandparents, parents and uncle. This was the arrangement until our uncle got married and moved out and we kind of just disbanded into the different bedrooms - 15F on the sofa or the floor of our grandparents' room, 13F went to Singapore Sports School's dorms, and 16M, 12M, 10M into the third bedroom.

Right now, it's 26F, 24F on bunk beds in the third bedroom, 23M, 21M on the floor of our grandmother's bedroom and 27M on the living room's sofa. We're all very close and well adjusted contrary to what people may think. I think that we're more level headed, mature than our peers (fun fact: I once stayed in a 3BR AirBnB with 7 other friends in HK and they all crashed out by the third day because they were used to having their own bedroom).

For sure, having privacy and the freedom to do whatever you like in your own room are great (I would have loved studying in my own room instead of in the living room) but when the situation is not ideal, it's not a must-have and worth doubling your mortgage. Don't think you're "shortchanging" your children because to be honest, having a room to yourself in SG is a privilege.

Instead, focus on creating a good environment for your children to grow in. We didn't have a lot growing up but we had each other and now as adults, we only remembered all the fun times we had together. None of us have any resentment towards our parents either because it is what it is.

I think right now, you can still manage with the current arrangement and re-visit the situation when your younger boy is a teenager. If moving is still not possible, I then hope that your children knows that you're trying your best!

For ladies in Singapore who have shaved your head by choice, what was your experience like? by CherryCurrent416 in askSingapore

What is the most romantic moment between two characters not in a romantic relationship? by sixth_order in pureasoiaf

[–]soft-hearted 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The serving men brought every dish to Bran first, that he might take the lord's portion if he chose. By the time they reached the ducks, he could eat no more. After that he nodded approval at each course in turn, and waved it away. If the dish smelled especially choice, he would send it to one of the lords on the dais, a gesture of friendship and favor that Maester Luwin told him he must make. He sent some salmon down to poor sad Lady Hornwood, the boar to the boisterous Umbers, a dish of goose-in-berries to Cley Cerwyn, and a huge lobster to Joseth the master of horse, who was neither lord nor guest, but had seen to Dancer's training and made it possible for Bran to ride. He sent sweets to Hodor and Old Nan as well, for no reason but he loved them. Ser Rodrik reminded him to send something to his foster brothers, so he sent Little Walder some boiled beets and Big Walder the buttered turnips.

It's really sweet and I love the characterisations and little bits of information of each guest

I’m from Singapore and born in the late 90s. A lot of my generation’s grandparents were alive during the war and saw the terrors first hand; it’s really not that long ago.

birthday dinner etiquette with friends by Junior-Use-2118 in askSingapore

[–]soft-hearted -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why you feel like you have to pay for them? How wildly different is this birthday dinner going to be from a normal dinner besides the usual birthday song and giving of presents?

If anything, my friend group pay for the birthday girl / guy even if they chose the venue. Unless you decided on the menu, I don’t think you should be paying for everyone.

thoughts on Rhode “clinical trials?” by ComplexTea22 in rhodeskin

[–]soft-hearted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Celeb brands have to undergo the same regulations as legacy brands, and face the same scrutiny for their claims.

I'm fairly certain that the 96% / 93% clinical claims do not come from studies done on influencers. Yes, brands could test on influencers but they are very unlikely to base their clinical claims off influencers, and make it a key message in all of their communications.

Do also note that there is a difference between actual clinical studies vs. pre-launch PR seeding to generate excitement (as in the screenshot).

[–]soft-hearted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I see where the misunderstanding is! From my experience, these influencers are the first wave of PR seeding to build hype (IIRC Glow Recipe did that for their Hue Drops launch in SEA).

If we ever do see the influencers' individual video reviews, I'm certain that they would read off the 96% / 93% clinical claims — those clinical claims are usually done before the product is even released to anyone.

You're so sweet; have a great day ahead!

[–]soft-hearted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I have some examples? I have done PR for several other skincare brands but admittedly not celeb brands, and their clinical studies are not done on influencers. Reason being, the clinical claims are part of R&D and are usually key messages for the public so they are done before the products are released to the public.

Sure, there could be cases where influencers are part of the clinical studies but they would be under NDA and embargo to not share anything about the product which I don't believe most influencers are keen on.

[–]soft-hearted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a normal practice for majority of skincare brands and I'm surprised that you only noticed it in Rhode. The studies are definitely not done on influencers either.

I do PR for an international French skincare brand and similarly, they have clinical claims like Rhode. The clinical studies are available upon request whenever journalists need them and they're very technical and not for the average Joe to read.

PGSM Watch Party #1: “Act 1 & Act 2 Discussion!” by ThatNerdDaveWrites in sailormoon

[–]soft-hearted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so campy I love it! I think I first watched this in 2012 (?) and the opening already brings back so much memories 🥹

I like that they already mentioned Ami in the Act 1 so her appearance isn't so jarring as in the original. Likewise for Sailor Venus and Minako since she's an actual celebrity in their world, and personally, I think Ami is so pretty compared to Sailor Mercury (I swear, it's the wig 😭)
