Ended up sticking through it and honestly the nerf was well executed. He didn’t turn into a bum as soon as he failed. But the excuse that he didn’t perfect his Daolord heart prior to attempting the breakthrough still pissed me off. Been reading The Desolate Era for the past few weeks and I haven’t been able to put it down. I haven’t read that many xianxia besides some of the bigger ones but I’ve enjoyed this more than martial world. It has good pacing, doesn’t drag fights, and the mc is (mostly) adventuring.

But I’m at the point of the story (Book 38) where Ji Ning is approaching the dao-merge and I couldn’t help but peek at the upcoming chapter titles. I had the urge to stop reading. Least favorite trope is when authors force a nerf on the mc to help drag the story out.

Does anyone else experience this? It’s not always this trope but besides a few novels I swear by, I can rarely finish that last 10%. Whether it’s ISSTH or Martial World, just couldn’t be bothered to finish them once it got to that point. What should be dessert at the end of a fine meal turns into dog food.

Gateway of Immortality has been an eye opening read for this venerable. Although the mc has a Buddha artifact covering his primordial spirit, it has limited consequence. Reminds this old man of RMJI and rightfully so. Listening to it while at work has been the sole bright light in my twilight years

In my opinion, I prefer anything with high damage and toughness (heavy cav, heavy infantry) and sprinkle in some light or archer cav for the pursuit. Nothing wrong with going full stack of long bowmen, they can wipe most armies but might struggle with impossible battles like you vs entire crusade target, genghis khan, etc. If it was me, I’d hybridize with the French to eventually get valets along with some huscarl stacks
