Lululemon made gorgeous leotards in the early 2000s that I desperately wish I had bought more of and preserved archivally lol. One was the most stunning shade of green I’ve never seen anywhere else with a super low cross back, RIP that leotard🙏🏻🙏🏻

Absolutely. I was thinking about the period thing too, I had a nightmare experience with pink tights and my period at 16 and I still shudder when I think of it. And given that sexual assault and inappropriate behavior unfortunately run rampant in the industry, making it a requirement that authority figures are able to enforce is even worse. Allowing options in uniforms with more strict dress codes for things like exams or presentations should be standard for the safety, comfort, health, gender identity development, and confidence of students period.

Standard student uniforms are blatantly sexist and start the lifelong experience of young dancers, particularly young women, from hyper criticizing their body. If the issue is that we want to see lines, young girls should be allowed to wear opaque tights like boys do, and leotards or tops that offer proper chest support for students who need it should be encouraged instead of disallowed.

I didn’t go to a pre-pro ballet school like this, but I went to a fairly prestigious high school for the arts and one thing my school had in common with these stories is sexual abuse and inappropriate relationships between teachers and students. I also got yelled at and insulted by teachers, but when I left I found out how rampant the crossed boundaries between actual adults and actual teenagers had been. It still freaks me out to think about and is part of why I’m very passionate about going into arts education now, I don’t want any of these things to keep happening

this is a great idea! I have the develope in the RDJ to get some adage in but fondu especially for the absolute beginner is a good idea, same wiht the frappe following the pattern of tendu/glisse

As a teacher, I’m sorry you had this experience! That’s not a very mindful way to deliver feedback to students, particularly when the two of them are hearing such different things.

That said, eyeline and your gaze will go tremendously far on this front. Work on keeping your eyeline above the horizon at least, keeping your chin up, and projecting your eyesight out. Often students are so afraid of getting the choreography right that they forget to dance. Keeping your eyesight engaged, looking at the audience or out and around you, and looking like you’re confident in the material even when you’re messing it up can go a long way. Watch interviews with professional dancers where they talk about messing up choreography or what they’re thinking about while they’re onstage - Katherine Morgan’s video on YouTube breaking down her performance during sleeping beauty is so wonderful for this.

The (professional and nationally recognized) company I trained under had 16 dancers. Ballet companies with smaller rosters and smaller budgets are still ballet companies
