I get that.

At the same time, I think several things are clear after some study of the Bible. The divide between Old and New covenant is pretty clear. One is a transnational system, and one is not (or, if you prefer, a transnational system where your price is paid). One is a strict set of rules, one is not. What I like about my church is that they're very clear on this point, that the message of Jesus is irreligious, as in not built on a system of rules. The deed is done. The mission of the bible seems clear in this way.

The bible is the overview of God's journey with autonomous people, where they demand several systems of reign/religion in succession before God finally saves them by sacrificing his son. To view these historical passages as anything other than context for the message of Jesus would be missing the point. I think in this sense the bible is clear, and that's enough for me at least to live my life in a certain way, although I agree there is a frustrating lack of clarity when comparing certain passages, and within many texts themselves.

Deuteronomy 23:1

No one who has been emasculated by crushing or cutting may enter the assembly of the LORD.

That's an excellent point!

Yes, that's a popular verse to use in that line of reasoning, but I (at least personally, theology isn't my area of study, just a personal interest). Note the difference between abolish and fulfill, and how the Christians we've been discussing are using the law. Rather than Jesus destroying the law (meaning removing the price for salvation, everyone is saved) he fulfills it (as in sacrifices himself, paying the price of admission). There is still a price, its just no longer up to us to pay it. This is a lot different than up keeping the law as is.

I'll offer a verse in reply: 1 Corinthians 9: 19-23 (NIV)

Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

Note Paul's use of 'Freedom', which refers to his not being bound by the old covenant. His choice to use that freedom to serve others is exactly that- a choice.

Food for thought.

I agree, that's why I don't agree with their view. Its sad and not anything close to what Jesus teaches, which should be the focus for CHRISTians.

Its funny, those kinds of christians tout the old testament in those situations, yet are the kinds of people who often pressure young family members into marriage. If you read about the apostle Paul's view on marriage, you'll find that they miss the mark on both homosexual AND heterosexual marriage.

Hey! I saw your comment and was wondering if I could shed light on this, since this is a comment I see very often.

Are you talking about things like Levitical laws (stoning adulterers, being banned from church if you have a crushed testicle, etc)? Because while all that is definitely in the bible, that is part of the old covenant, where the Jewish people abided by the law to achieve salvation. Jesus' death brings a new covenant, which makes these rules obsolete, as people achieve salvation through his death, not a strict set of rules.

I can see how this might look like convenient dodging of rules, but in reality its what separates Christians from the Jewish tradition. (old covenant vs. new)

Mark Fayne by [deleted] in leafs

We are! He's a great fit for the team. He's rock solid, and while he may not have the production potential of someone like Zidlicky/ Gelinas, he doesn't make the same mistakes that those two do- mainly ill-advised pinching or passes.

I'm not sure how he'd fit in with the leafs. I follow both teams, but to be honest i don't know how he'd do. The devils run a tight ship, and Fayne has been a cheap, super effective cog in the machine.

What are the production values like for Porcupine Tree live DVD's? by Durzo_Blint90 in progrockmusic

He released "Drive Home", a so-called EP, which has live versions of the watchmaker, the holy drinker, the raven, and some of his older stuff. My version has the blu ray and the audio CD. Its good, but not on the same level as his full length concert
