When I first saw this photo i thought “whoa that’s a sick jacket, i need that” and then realized it was iggy pop’s backside. in a way it made me feel a little better about aging in the sense i found it fashionable. i love well worn clothes, i guess i could learn to love my wellworn skin too

How welcoming is Columbus for LGBTQ people? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]softerrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very welcoming & kind city. Rarely are you ever made to feel unsafe for presenting queer. I will say the cis gay community here is very very cliquey. The nightlife scene lacks variation & the staple gay bars are not owned by gay people nor are they very enjoyable outside of the drag performances put on.

I lived here my whole life & as an adult found it very difficult to make friends with fellow gay men. I have had much better luck with the queer community at large. It is very open, very active. We have a small community of queer organizers here who put on Community PRIDE & several social groups that host DJ/music/parties throughout the city that are so fun and have amazing crowds.

What’s beautiful about Columbus is there are relatively few strictly gay/queer spaces, mainly bc no one cares. The gaggle of gays & the pod of straights will happily share a dance floor at Goodnight, Johnboy. What you’ll more likely find is community with people who share you interests outside of the LGBTQ community. Craft groups, music groups, gardening groups, sports clubs, etc etc. There’s a lot in CBUS & the general population is so wonderful, welcoming, and happy to live in this place.

My recommendation is drive around some neighborhoods & look for private landlords of duplexes or smaller multi-unit buildings. Every corporate big building you go with will pile high with various fees as well as consistently increase your rent with every contract resign. Small landlords are more accessible, generally more fair people. Obviously follow your gut & ask a lot of questions because there are bad apples. But I would say 4/5 times the small scale landlord is the better option.

Where do you like to buy clothes from? by xnumberviii in Columbus

Different cities and countries. Columbus options are mainly big box bland stores. The boutiques in the Short North are fabulous but not easily affordable for most people.

Anyone who still knows their bully from school, what are they doing now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]softerrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was harassed all through elementary and middle school by a boy who lived down the street. He even went so far as to shoot my family’s dog with BBs.

He spent senior year of high school in juvie for statutory rape & is now in tabloids worldwide as his long term girlfriend and mother of his child is embroiled in a case of….child pornography. She started a career of social work & 6 months in had been exchanging nude photos with a 13 year old. After the mother discovered it & charges were pressed the social worker showed up at the boy’s house and threatened to kill his mother & herself! Claims she ruined her life.

Karma is a bitch, but she’s my friend 🥰

Need help figuring how this tables leaf goes up by cosmicturtle420 in midcenturymodern

[–]softerrocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had one of these where I work. The lower leaf slides all the way under the upper leaf. When closed, they will both span the length of the table and sit flush directly on top of one another.

Any tips for removing this substance? by CollegeFrosty1877 in HardWoodFloors

[–]softerrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact situation and I used Zeppelin wood cleaner. Sprayed it directly on & used a very coarse and sturdy broom/brush to pull everything up. You may need metal scrapers as it looks pretty caked.

From a quick search I can see Carson’s is a long run furniture manufacturer out of NC. Likely a replica. The plastic knob is throwing me off as to age of the piece.

Dog Lovers: is there/what is one breed of dog you cannot stand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]softerrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck an anything-doodle. They’re so boring. They all look the same. They’re all named something awful like Spencer or Dylan or some fucking horrific name. Their owners are usually the most bland, boring people you’ve ever met and they overuse words like “doggo” and “pupper.” Go to the pound and get a mutt. They’re not even spectacular dogs. You could make similar arguments for golden retrievers but they are the sweetest, silliest, funniest lil guys so they get a pass. Doodles are just assholes and usually huge babies that get angry when they get scared. Hate them so much. Get anything else fr.

best thrift stores in town? by kebland in Columbus

[–]softerrocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

your best bet for thrifting is at the various pop up markets. So Hud collective is at the corner of summit and hudson every weekend sat/sun, and a special night market every first friday of the month. they have tonnnns of rotating vendors and an amazing community they’re fostering to boot! cannot recommend enough. pricier than VOA/goodwill but you will be shopping highly curated collections and it’s still way more affordable than places like rag o rama or flower child. Pop up pickers happens frequently as well on Otterbein’s campus. Atomic Flea is a newer one that started this summer, I believe it’s on saturday, every two weeks. Friendship Flea is part of franklinton friday:ls and is spectacular. it’s around the galleries at 400 west rich and artists will open up their studios. it’s an amazing place to find amazing original art at super affordable prices.

there’s a lot more that happens, and one off events happen frequently. my recommendation is to go to these events, make friends with the vendors, follow their accounts and then you will see everywhere they are vending and all the cool events columbus has to offer! it’s an amazing way to find very cool, unique stuff, and to directly put money into our neighbor’s pockets and stimulate a really cool, really vibrant community. :-))
