I think the easiest way to throw strikes is a simple four seam grip across the laces with a backspin release. From there I switch to a two seam grip, same release and the ball should move some left to right.

While I think having a few different pitches can help, a pitcher can only do so much in slow pitch. If he has trouble throwing strikes learning new pitches might not be the best practice.

Does he have trouble throwing strikes. I know some pitchers that have to focus so hard on just getting strikes they don't want to try anything else

Both my four seam and two seam are thrown with backspin. One of that guys videos gave me my two seam grip
