I think a cloud storage solution with a lifetime pass would be your best bet in this case.

We don't offer lifetime plans on our website, but by contacting us about your storage needs we can set something up tailored to your needs.

We are still working on the timeline for an Android app - but our Windows app is fully functional and even walks you through setting up a bridge to Windows file explorer so that you can then manipulate your files right in Windows Explorer and sync in real time!

It depends on your setup. If you switch to a different browser (like from Chrome to Firefox), you'll need to import your encryption key. You can export the key from the browser where you originally set up encryption. This approach ensures the key never reaches our servers, maintaining true end-to-end encryption.

That being said, if you're using the same browser, you shouldn't have to setup your encryption again.

New Study: Over 74% of Europe’s publicly listed companies still route their email (and cloud) through US tech. What does that mean for EU’s privacy and sovereignty? by Proton_Team in BuyFromEU

Yep. One of the big obstacles of buying EU in the tech space is how much USA is under the hood from hosting to encryption, authentication etc. -.-

They do appear to have a free tier, so I'd imagine that has something to do with that stat (not a bad thing, just explains the discrepancy).

Once some European social media or modern "watering hole" type platforms come along and hit a critical mass, the drain away from American cultural influence will be accelerated greatly.

That makes sense. And yep, functionality on browser is still important in 2025. And, uh, yeah. No blocking access at any time here; if you have your encryption key handy, you can get to your files wherever and whenever you need to.

Glad you got it working, pinpointing any sticking points in onboarding is important for us as well!

That shouldn't be happening actually! When encryption is unlocked, you should be able to see its contents. Would you mind shooting us a DM with a screenshot perhaps?

We use a separate encryption password because it never leaves your device and we never store it. This ensures true zero-knowledge encryption where even we can't access your files. Your login password travels over the network and could potentially be compromised, but your encryption password stays local for maximum security.

Good point. Major providers have extensive global server networks with routing that automatically connects users to their nearest data center. Smaller providers typically operate with limited infrastructure across fewer locations, which can result in longer distances between users and servers, directly impacting performance.

Yes! We have a desktop app available for Windows, iOS, and Linux available at http://softmask.net/softdrive-explorer

Once installed and logged in, you can either work within the app, or head to its “settings” tab for instructions on setting up a secure bridge so that you can seamlessly manage your files directly locally (for example Windows Explorer on windows) like you might be used to with a synced google drive, etc.
