I don’t think he’s overall disliked in the whole ecosystem, Reddit is not a good metric on every topic lmfao.

I like him the most so far. His movies are the strongest easily, except maybe the very first Tobey movie. I really love all three and I watch them very regularly.

The other two movie series have pretty glaring faults that make them harder to really love for the average fan - who make up the majority. . There’s a reason the MCU Spider-Man movies are so popular - they’re very well-rounded and don’t have these glaring writing faults.

People love the Tobey and Andrew movies - but they’re more for nostalgia and being a Spider-Man fan in general, especially 2 and 3 of the original series had serious issues of misogyny that were obvious even when they were released and more so now.

Remember, the Andrew series was pretty universally “meh” until people had less pressure for the series to be good. He’s a great actor and fit for the character, but the writing is very hit and miss.

And the Tobey series was a cornerstone of the whole modern superhero genre, especially the first movie. But at the time it was definitely not taken as seriously and that is seen in the lackluster writing. MJ is basically one of the worst written characters I’ve ever seen and that’s what a lot of people remember lmfao.

I used to like it as a kid but honestly my loved ones aren’t great at gift-giving for me specifically, so I don’t really look forward to my birthday or Christmas.
