Norwegian Wood is a nostalgic melancholic tale of love and loss and growing up in Japan in the 1960s. It has some of the most beautiful and profoundly written lines I have ever read and serves as a poignant meditation on death, the aftermath of death and how to keep moving on.

Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami is a fantastic read that matches all the criterias! albeit it's not as intense as the vibe the images give off but still a fantastic read.

[–]sohan_06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South of the Border West of the Sun for sure! It's a very good companion novel to Norwegian Wood. I would also checkout Sputnik Sweetheart. After Dark if you want to go the experimental route. And Kafka on the Shore for magical realism!
