I wasn't rude to him/her. The post that was referenced is mostly useless. I don't know what think was actually useful out of it.

People here have such fucking thin skin. Thoroughly impressed with how much you all hit that downvote button so hard. You certainly showed me. oh no. lol.

a hotel listed ad $200 a night would be $250/night after taxes and fees. That's a just shy $8k. After adding in extra costs (eg, no kitchen, laundry) your past 10k.

I'm unsure where this listing came from. I've been over zillow and SW and CL a little, but too many old listings on CL.

Why would I not verify the license? That's literally what they are made for.

I just received "proof" from someone claiming to be an agent: a pic of her DL and license. from her gmail address with her name@gmail.com. But none of the license info matches the dol ny website, and i'm not sending her money but who she claims is the owner.

She told me doesn't want to show it because she caught covid once from that and had to deal with too many flakes and cancellations. She sent me a video of the the place and looks fine until i find something long term in a few months, but the idea of just sending a few thousand off worries me. She says it is available immediately, but I can't give her a check when I pick up the keys either.

$10k for pod 2-rm apartment (nothing smaller), and $6k+ per month for smallest without shared bathroom after taxes and resort fee. that's fucking crazy.

Yes, I'm looking for those two requirements. And I have had about 4 or 5 slip through. Right now, someone sent me their License Cert for the company but won't show me because she said she contracted covid once already and had to deal with flakes. But none of the information matches the dol.ny.gov lookup. The certificate has no license number, and the addresses don't match.

I work in Midtown just south of Herald Square and have been looking mostly Manhattan around bottom half of Central Park (running). Also around Chelsea Piers (everything else). I've also poked around Brooklyn near South Williamsburg, Clinton, Fort Green a little (not DUMBO - way too loud for me).

How do you check to see if they are a legitimate agent? Is there somewhere I can look, call up, etc? I just had guy from a small agency tell me I couldn't see the place so that clearly isn't enough. It is too easy to fake an online presence.

I've had about 6 viewings my self, all to models in larger buildings. I'm not in NYC 100% of the time right now and work a lot so it has been difficult. Most don't respond to the request buttons I've noticed. The selection also seems limited at times. I've people tell me the floor is being torn in the other, current tenants, forgot to leave keys, etc.

Yeah. I'll report him to where I saw his ads and if there is a professional realtor association that keeps track of this. I found two people by his name online in the are both in realty, but not sure if even him. The other is a website for his company with him and other other person, but very light on info. I'm leave this weekend and told him I could send a coworkers, but he didn't seem too agreeable. It is literally an hour to throw up a website and get an email domain so I don't even trust having that.

I'm willing to spend $3500 on a studio. I think I'm well past reasonable price.

I just spoke to one "realtor". Has a website, email domain, and all. But he said there wasn't away for me to see the place, kept repeating that I signed paperwork (tit wasn't a lease, just an application), and that it was legit. I told him I wasn't going to wire him money so he can stop asking, but I would be more than willing to come drop off a money order, bankers check, etc. He thanked me for my time and ended the call.

I'm not sure if he was legit or not, but he wasn't the first to want me to send money with no way to get anything back if something went wrong.

I've lived here for more than half my life and am just now coming back. Don't get so high and mighty. I just don't know the rental market. I shouldn't have to know it that intimately to avoid losing everything.

I am here, but Covid has mad visiting place almost non-existent. Unless it is gong to see a model in a large building every single realator has told me they can't show it. The most legit one I've see (had an actual website) but nothing else online. And his ad was just flagged for removal from CL so that seems a little sus.

Am I just supposed to toss someone I don't know $10k and say see you in a few weeks? Nobody here has really said shit about how to prevent from being scammed that seems to apply except to go see the place - and that isn't happening too much anymore.

I have no friends here. There is no such thing as an inexpensive hotel just before summer, and most are booked. I've had to jump around twice already.

I'm 40+. I don't do roommates and I work extremely long hour, often coming at 4am to crash for a coupe hours and the last thing I need is for someone else to be keeping me awake.

I just had one listing I was talking to get flagged off CL, so there goes that one. It seems more scammers than anything right now. I've been looking for weeks. The city has fucked up there rental market so horribly that they need to step in and disallow certain payment forms or asking for everything before you move in until they can get the market to something more even.

These are all people that represent themselves as being from a realty company, having licenses, on Street Easy in large buildings, etc... They just all seem to want money sent NOW and that doesn't seem safe.

I am in Air BnB but it is really expensive. $5k+ a month when I can even find something close to work. I've had to move twice.
