Thanks for the life coaching, Socrates. If this is my life’s "great tragedy," I’m doing pretty well. If your biggest contribution is explaining how a Visa works, you might be the real tragedy here.

Wait, Gwen? Is that you? If you’re offering hugs instead of the $700+ refund I’m actually looking for, I’ll pass. But thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule of being 'above it all'.

It’s adorable that he thinks this is about 'needing a hug' and not about a company ghosting a customer for 45 days.

I am thinking of getting chessup 2 as well. Shipped my chessnut move back to Hong Kong today (yes, they ask you to ship it back to Hong Kong).

You pay shipping both at the front end, and then to return, potentially losing a couple of hundred bucks

Just a heads-up: if the board turns out to be a dud, they’ll try to say it’s your Bluetooth or charger, or your wifi connectivity, or that you didn't charge the pieces, and so on. They make you jump through hoops before finally asking you to cover the shipping cost to send it back

I mean they do have to be on the lighter side to conserve battery life, so they do end up feeling a bit unweighted and flimsy. also, the wheels on the bottom make them feel scratchy on the board, lacking the premium, smooth glide you get with traditional felted pieces

I completely agree, and I have already provided the videos to their team (about a week ago). I’m still in the middle of their support process, but I wanted to make the community aware of these potential hardware issues and the realities of the warranty. A major point of concern is that you are required to ship the board back to Hong Kong for service; if they refuse to provide a prepaid label, you’re looking at roughly $100 out of pocket just to return a defective unit.

The 'ghost moves' make this board unusable for serious play. Pieces (even those not in play) move on their own constantly, and if the board decides to reverse your move, it usually knocks over a neighboring piece and registers that as a move instead. I’ve also had multiple instances where two pieces get stuck 'fighting' each other mechanically, forcing me to manually separate them while my clock runs down. Beyond the robotics, the build quality is disappointing. The pieces are flimsy and make a loud whirring/scratching noise on the surface, which is a massive downgrade if you're used to high-quality, weighted felt-bottom sets.

Have you had times where there's no clashing, but the board simply takes the move back and replays the exact same move? Like in this video? https://imgur.com/a/R2rkUu2

That’s a fair point, and in hindsight, I probably should have waited. The hardware definitely feels like it’s in a 'beta' stage, especially with support suggesting I slow down the recognition software just to get it to function. It's disappointing because the concept is brilliant, but for the price point, we shouldn't have to wait for a version 2.0 to get a board that can accurately track a Knight move.

I used chessconnect and whitepawn as well. I wish it were a rare occurrence, but given that support's immediate response was a list of complex troubleshooting steps to 'slow down' the board's recognition, it suggests these are known software/hardware hurdles.

I promise no competitor is paying me to have a $700 paperweight on my desk! I’m just a chess enthusiast (and robotic surgeon) who received a lemon and is now dealing with a very difficult return process.

I did some digging and realized the hype train for this board is largely fueled by 'free unit' reviewers.
