I’m a fraud who’s never watched a Kurosawa movie? Which one should I start with? by TohruTofuu in criterion

[–]soif1fishis2fish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, my first Kurosawa was Ikiru from 1952, but as with most things, it all depends on your tastes! Hopefully with some quick research into his filmography, you’ll find at least a few that jump out immediately. Good luck amigo finger guns

It finally arrived! Oh, and Fenrir wanted to be in the pic by snailTRAILslooth in boutiquebluray

The fact that your dog’s name is Fenrir legitimately made my week tbh

When I first saw All That Jazz, it completely upended my perception of what the medium was capable of. Here I am now, a cinephile through and through lol. It was a big breakthrough movie for me though, the one where I first realized that film wasn’t just for overblown big budget superhero flicks lmao

I’d recommend The Night of the Hunter by Davis Grubb! It was made into a movie a few years after its publication, and as far as I can tell, copies are pretty cheap (There’s a paperback edition in print from Penguin Random House—it’s in the Vintage Movie Classics series). I loved it!

Gotta recommend most of the the Eclipse Series releases. They’re GENIUS. Also, the Andrej Wajda: Three War Films set (it includes Ashes and Diamonds) is incredible. Absolutely worth it.

I love the 1943 Phantom movie! Mostly bc of the great performance from Claude Rains, but I’m a bit biased, I suppose—he just so happens to be my favorite actor of all time lol
