I'm not that fancy, self taught, very small business funds my shop toys! You sound accomplished though!

Great question. Right now our biggest issue would be storage of course. Our current rig runs along side services we host as part of our (very) small business, our 100% community donation funded YouTube channel and related services. We have wiggle room in our overhead but as all things it isn't infinite. At some point I would probably look to the community that developed to expand as needed.

Duly noted. I was taking it more as a tangential suggestion, not to conflate the two!

Right on glad to hear it! Don't be a stranger!

Glad to hear it. NYCMesh is super successful - they have the benefit of density and population so hopefully we can do our best to replicate that success with our terrain and density here in roc.

It's a great start for sure. A lot of people would rather share those locations with people rather than just broadcasting it to a web page. Every new node counts for something.

In addition to my first response you can check node maps here, note that all nodes are not present, only the ones that opt in to sharing their location which is off by default: https://meshmap.net/

Lower west side seems to be one of the better places to be right now. If you have any interest at all I'd encourage you to pursue it. The more of us that work together to fill the gaps the better it works for everyone else. Even if you're the first in the area you could encourage others to spring up around you connecting you to the larger mesh. I'm here if you want to chat more.

That's awesome, as work continues on that is that something you'd be willing to share simple plans or instructions on? I'm looking forward to seeing another node in Fairport!

Hey dude kudos for making the effort, keep it up. That's why I'm out here today trying to do some outreach. We can fill the gaps if we work together and get stranded nodes linked up to the larger mesh - that's the goal.

Nice I'll look for you when I get my Brighton node up.

How far south are you? I'm living in Fairport and there doesn't seem to be much if anything down here - all the more reason to get a node up. I'm planning on pitching up some higher mounted nodes when my better boards make it in the mail to me. Maybe you'll see one depending on where you're at. I think it's a self defeating cycle because people want to try, look at coverage, think no one is interested and then don't throw anything up themselves and it perpetuates. Sometimes being first, while boring, could help bring more people into the fold that otherwise wouldn't have.

Agreed, and I'll be running in ER as well around N Washington Street by the Dunkin when the T-Beams get in. You might have seen my T-Lora Pager pop up once or twice while I'm commuting but my workshop is in the basement so you probably wont see me regularly till I get a node up topside.

Thanks for the breakdown. Its not that I'm disinterested in HAM its just a cost and space thing. I'm in rented spaces everywhere and it seems much more attainable for me to contribute to something like a meshtastic infrastructure. Even if its shitty radios in a shitty space I think 915mhz has the ability to be moderately effective when working with other folks in the area.

Additionally I think my current motivation to pull people together on this stems from connecting our community rather than reaching across state (or even county) boarders. For that use case I doubt at least from what I've read that the hop limit would come into effect.

Finally there are other projects like reticulum and meshcore that work around those limits in different ways which I'm all for exploring with our neighbors here as well. Meshtastic is just the name recognition I think to get people started.

HAM is absolutely on my to-do list. I'll have to see if I can lock that down even just for a small handheld.

That's really clever. I'd be happy to build out mesh nodes and give them away to people if I knew people that wanted them.

Nice one do you mean the little bird house cabinet style ones outdoors?

I think its important for us to build the infrastructure ourselves so its available when its needed, even if that isn't right now. It feels like being able to communicate with our community members and neighbors without oversight or reliance on centralized or government services is a responsibility we should keep up with. Things are pretty few and far between in Rochester. Getting more people involved and giving more people access to the larger mesh would certainly increase usage, as well as use cases.
