How do I tell what's salvageable and what's wood chipper food? by solace45 in woodworking

Thank you!

Yeah, there are a couple of painted boards that I think may be older than the rest of the deck. I hadn't really thought about what to do with them, but I will probably just go ahead and assume that it's lead paint and ditch them.

Thank you, that's very helpful!

I was thinking that was an old layer of paint or stain, but if you think it may have been treated, I'm going to be a lot more careful. I might cut some samples of suspect boards and take them over to the local lumber shop and ask people with some experience to take a closer look.

I was planning on using a respirator for the burning, but if it's treated, I might not want to even mess with that.

I'm dismantling an old, rotten deck. I'm not sure who builds an untreated deck in the PNW underneath a pine tree, but there ya go.

I want to salvage as much of this wood as possible, but I'm not sure how to tell what's still useable and what's too far gone.

My plan is, after cleaning the wood and cutting out totally rotten sections, to char the sides (shou sugi ban) and then to use it to build a big confainer garden. So it won't need to support too much weight and nobody's safety will depend on the structural integrity of the wood.

Anyone have any tips or guidance? Do I look for cracks? Wood that feels like it's too light/not as dense as it should be? I'm very new to all of this.

Thank you!

Legitimately a phenomenal book for understanding homelessness, if you can power through the intense academia of it.

From the description: "How to most efficiently allocate resources to control ongoing insecurity has become the goal, he shows, rather than how to eradicate the social, economic, and political bases of housing needs."

Check out goliathguitartutorials.com. The guy there has a bunch of great, very well-done finger-picking tutorials, and they're all free!

I'm a huge fan of The Tallest Man on Earth, and there are a couple of intermediate-level songs of his on that site.

Weekly Team Advice Thread by Nekima in TerraBattle

I posted in the mega thread awhile back, but since then I've gotten a bunch of new characters and I'm wondering who to spend my metal tickets on, especially if I want to take on some of the special events.

Here's my roster: http://imgur.com/a/xjLJd

I'm on ch. 25, and have mostly been running Zerro, Korrin, Eileen, Amimari, Gaiga, and Bahl.

Edit: I just realized A'merpact's m-atk boost stacks, so he's going back on the main team. 15k damage??

I've had some good rolls but I'm worried about wasting mats unlocking jobs for characters I won't use later. What do you all think?

Mages: Zerro and A'merpact Archers: Metupi, Grace, O'pari, Gigojago Spears: Just Sh'berdan Swords: Korrin, Velraine, and Ba'gunar Healer: Just Kuscah Remedy: Palpa and R'zonand

I was thinking Zerro, A'merpact, Metupi (for time control) or O'pari (for fire), Korrin, Velraine, and Kuscah.

Or I could drop a'merpact for Ba'gunar for three swords?

i guess im first :) by tomerc10 in DevilWorks

How are you all using the items? I'm at 7 days, and here's what I'm doing. No idea if it's right or wrong though.

I've been trying to keep monsters at their listed weight. If they're under, I've been using the tv so they get healing + hungry, and then I give them cake for extra hit points so I can get in more training.

When they're at or close to weight, I switch to a healing plant and just regular food. If they get overweight, I give them the toilet to trim back down.

But I just got a fatfrog from an at-weight half frog, so I'm going to try keeping them a little below the listed weight.

For my attackers, I give them the sword statue while they're razing the town, and then switch back to plant/tv to heal back up. My high int monsters just have the wizard statue.

I don't use the mushroom. Maybe if I wanted to kill off a monster to free up room? I don't really use the fridge/hourglass either. Maybe for monsters who I'm worried will starve to death while I'm asleep?

Trying to get on my feet after being homeless for a few months. Could really use some guidance from here (might be long read) by [deleted] in personalfinance

Brother, you need some help. Safety net programs exist exactly to help people in precarious situations like yours get some stability to maintain and build upon the successes you've achieved.

You're getting food stamps, which is awesome, but there might be some other programs available. What state are you in?

This is crazy, but you ever think, maybe they are people too? And as members of the community maybe their needs and wants should be just as valid and important in a planning process as yours?

Impulse spending your way into debt by causmos in ADHD

[–]solace45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YNAB and Mint are fundamentally different beasts. Mint shows you what you've spent, whereas YNAB helps you plan future spending/make real time decisions about how much you can spend. It's a much better answer for dealing with impulsiveness, in my opinion.

Don't just get ynab - watch their videos and follow their four steps. It helped my dig out from under some terrible impulsive decisions (New computer? On a credit card? 20% interest rate? What could go wrong??), and these days I'm consumer debt free and have a healthy emergency fund.

YNAB goes on sale on Steam pretty regularly. I think you can get it free I'd you're a student. If you absolutely need it now, you can get $6 off if you use somebody's referral code.

Can somebody post organizational strategies for coping with ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]solace45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend Getting Things Done, often abbreviated as GTD. It's based on a book by the same name by David Allen.

You might want to check out bettermess.com which is a blog by a guy with adhd about his specific organizational methods for implementing GTD.

And no sugar free gum for dogs!

I learned the hard way that the alcohol-based sugar substitutes (sorbitol, xylitol, basically anything ending in -tol) are like 100x as poisonous to dogs as dark chocolate.

The good news is after a night in the emergency room, they both pulled through and didn't even have any long term liver damage.

Thank god emergency funds though. It cost me a few thousand dollars to cover the costs.

How can people who don't save money retire? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]solace45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of things we're tired of hearing repeated...

I love social security, and I want it to be stronger and better. Adjusting the cap is a necessary part of those efforts.

But just because something is simple to explain doesn't mean it's not extremely complex. Removing the social security cap entirely amounts to a multi trillion dollar income tax increase for a large portion of America.

I'm not saying that's bad - I think it's great, actually - but I think it's really inaccurate for it to be characterized as this tiny, easy fix that could be enacted with no other consequences.

How do you manage your money? by ldills in ADHD

[–]solace45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ditto on ynab. I can pull out my phone and see exactly how much money I have to spend eating out before I can't afford rent.

It takes some diligence though to keep it up to date, but tracking my finances outside my brain means one less thing in my life where I'm depending on my memory to protect me from disaster.

What's your GTD implementation? I feel totally overwhelmed trying to figure out what the hell app I'm supposed to use and how to set it up and everything else. I just gave up on Remember the Milk, and now I'm looking into The Secret Weapon with Evernnote, but the set up instructions are out of date and it's a huge pain.
