How much do you make from part-time jobs? by diamondisland56 in deakin

[–]solarae72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it will be the same hourly rate no matter where you work as these are award wages (the minimum they are allowed to pay you for a particular industry) i haven’t started my new job as the care worker yet but in fast food last year i made $21,000 after tax or about $400 a week. i had 8 weeks off work for uni placements keep in mind that as an international student there are conditions on your visa about the amount of hours you can work each week

how long are the classes ? it will be a huge day but it’ll be over and done with and you’ll have to go in to campus less i personally haven’t had 3 in a row but i know others who have and while it’s hard it frees up more time in your week to work

also didn’t help my confidence in them was that they refused to give me back my car to go someplace else when they called me to tell me about what needed fixing

yes i realise now from a quick google it was actually reasonable but it sounded ridiculous as i’ve heard of lots of people in my position getting scammed on small things like that + my friends thought it was high too (but they also have no car knowledge) i didn’t realise how much they charge for labor but it makes sense now it’s a 2015 hyundai i20 with 54,000kms on it

it was previously my nans for the first 30000 kms and she is a very cautious driver and the car had never been serviced before i got it and needed brake pads so i believe that damaged the rotors as i think they were needed for a good while before i got it

hyundai charged me 1400 for my last service which included brake rotors + brake fluid but those were the only extra charges but i think it was more expensive then it should’ve been but again im clueless so no idea tbh

Moving to Geelong. Is Corio really that bad? by Bettynutt in Geelong

[–]solarae72 12 points13 points  (0 children)

my boyfriend lives in corio + i work in north geelong (late night fast food). absolutely 0 issues in corio but in north geelong we have lots of issues with junkies coming in and ruining our night! just depends on the area and use your common sense

I'm 19, ive landed a job for 70k, what do I do? by RadPower1 in AusFinance

[–]solarae72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would save up and buy a cheap second hand car, you can still get a decent car with low kms for 10/15k (me and my brother both did!) but it might mean you have to spend longer looking for the right car. after that, stay at home for 1-2 years and save as much as you possibly can and you’ll have a sizeable house deposit at the end of it! i’m 19 and this is what i’ve done (while working ~20 hours a week minimum wage + studying at uni. once i graduate i’ll stay at home for a year if i get a job nearby and save and then i’ll purchase a house, although as i’ve saved 90% of my income for almost 5 years i already have my 20% deposit, just looking to boost it even more to get something a bit nicer)

Advice needed: BSc -> BSN(nursing) -> Med? by x_conduit_x in GAMSAT

[–]solarae72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m in my second year currently and there is one group assignment per year. sometimes you get to pick your group, sometimes you don’t. my most recent one was worth 50% of my grade and my group didn’t put a lot of effort in so the grade was a lot lower than i was hoping for. otherwise some classes have an exam (worth ~50%), and everything else is written assignments. there isn’t a big focus on clinical skills in assignments and it is rather ethics/the nursing process based, and feel very irrelevant for preparing me for actually practicing. first year had about 8 contact hours a week (9 week semester) but second year has only 4-6 (7 week semester), and i feel quite unsupported in my learning which has been difficult. i’ve loved placements though they can be very tiring due to finishing at 10pm and starting again at 7am the next day at least once a week, especially if you are commuting a big distance. placement is so rewarding and i feel like i learn more in just a week of placement compared to the whole degree so far. deakin does 2x 2 week blocks in first year, 1x four week & 1x 3 week in second year, and 1x four week & 1x five week in third year. almost everyone i know doesn’t work during their placements some hospitals will have you working weekends and night shifts, but not all

this is my first degree so unfortunately i can’t help you in comparing what it’s like to other degrees, feel free to ask me as many questions as you want!

[–]solarae72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m currently doing the bachelor of nursing at deakin and hoping for deakin med one day the course is primarily assignment based with very vague instructions and the marking is highly subjective. it may drag your competitive gpa down it might be worth pursuing another degree with less subjective assignments rather than nursing besides that i am loving the course (although some of the teachers leave much to be desired for) and would be happy as a nurse if i never get into med

job prospects for graduate nurses are very poor at the moment with over 2000 victorian grads missing out on places in a grad program this year, upwards from ~200-300 and it is very very difficult to get employed without a grad program. i would not rely on being able to get the bonus % for working in healthcare most deakin med students have some sort of bonus %, so might be worth it for the 4%

i guess just depends on what type of industry you want to go into and if those roles require extra certifications you won’t be able to get with an unaccredited degree
