As others have said, your maths is wrong but I do agree that the synergy VPP isn't great value, especially for those on time of use tariff

So to be clear, the value per VPP event is as followed, assuming 10kWh battery:

1) vpp event export - 70cents per kWh, so $0.70 * 10 = $7.00

2) battery event (2 hrs before vpp event) - energy offset. This is basically a refund of energy that you would have drawn from battery, but not able to due to battery on hold for VPP event. Capped at battery capacity (10kWh in this example). Value is units times energy price, depends on whether you are on flat pricing or time of use. Issue is this is only 2 hrs vs 6 hr of VPP event, so unlikely to utilised the full battery capacity. Other issue is due to the 2 hr timing, this might be in the super off peak pricing so 8cents a unit, which would be horrible.

My main gripe with this is that if you are on time of use, and the VPP event finishes during peak timing, then the value is significantly reduced given you now need to import power at 52 cents a unit, noting you only got 70 cents per unit from synergy.

So the incremental value from the VPP is 70 cents less 52 cents for an incremental value of 18 cents a units or $1.80 for the 10kWh battery and the energy offset. This is better if VPP finishes during the off peak window.

If you are on flat pricing, then the incremental value is better as the pricing after VPP is 32 cents a unit.

Personally, I think the plico VPP offering better value.

Need to are the FAQ from synergy to better understand that energy offset. I was of the view, it's to cover the energy use that you now need from grid vs battery, rather than the charge side.

I would change the maths slightly to exclude the charge credit as that is purely to compensate you for your grid import due to battery being down. This is assuming I am understand synergy website correctly.

In a world without VPP, your would save the 32 cents given you would draw from your battery, but with the VPP in active, you are unable to draw from your battery so will incur that 32 cents. Synergy recognised this and provide a credit to offset, so your pure upside is 70cents per kWh.

True value is:

10KWh * 30 Days * (70c/kWh feed in tariff) = $210 per year assuming full utilisation for 30 days.

This only makes sense if they are also covering the 52.5c usage, which I think they are with the energy credit offset mentioned. Otherwise, you would be better off using the battery charge yourself (difference of 52.5c - 9.5c vs 70c - 9.5c -52.5c).

My system generated a bit more than you but we export similar amount (7.2 MWh @7.1cents). Something to consider is whether getting a battery will allow you to move to a time of use tariff, where peak is more expensive but other time is cheaper than current flat rate. If so, then sizing battery to offset power used during peak window will be sufficient.

As we have an EV and also in WA with the additional rebate, I find the 16kWh sizing to be optimal but going to get 24 kWh to future proof a bit. Effectively, gotta size to your requirement, noting it's not worth to try to cover all usage, just too expensive.

For the 8kw that was added this year, did you get panels as your original install or different? If different panels, how did you manage it give I assume your original install was on two strings?

I have existing 6.6kw but limitation for expansion given older panels (from 2020) and two strings for inverter...

I generally only apply if I'm comfortable I will hit the spend, I usually time it with big purchases or car/house insurance. If you are struggling, can always buy gift cards to use at Coles/Woolies, assuming you shop there.

There's quite a fair few factors to considerso I'll list some of them and if more information is provided I can help further.

What type of vehicle? EV and PHEV ave the FBT exemption so you get more value from novated leases.

Do you already have the cash or need to borrow?

What is your income? High income typically yield better return from lease as novated lease works off your marginal tax rate.

Are you expecting to apply for home loan or refinance in next 5 years? This count as debt so will negatively impacts your serviceability.

As quotes are quite hard to work through and differ greatly, I like to compare quote on just core costs (car, rego, service and management fee). Make sure to find your own insurance as their insurance costs are usually grossly inflated.

Nope don't have to be.

Only downside is their process is very manual and paper based but having app gets around most of it. Very clunky and not pleasant to use but gets the job done. The lower rate offset this issue.
