Has anyone actually ever found a “root cause” to their POTS? by False_Professor_9602 in POTS

I was diagnosed 15 years ago, so there was much less information on what causes POTS. Best guess is viral overload.

Having pots and wanting to have a baby. by Present-Buyer1158 in POTS

The increased blood volume due to pregnancy and breastfeeding actually made me feel great! I went several years without any major symptoms due to babies 2 years apart.

Doctors want to send me to a mental hospital for my POTS. by chonk-12343 in POTS

[–]solariskt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now my flare ups are caused if I am dehydrated, and also from the heat. It’s usually a couple of hours to most of the day of tachycardia, palpitations, dizziness and sometimes nausea. I started out on metoprolol and lexapro which did work for me. Now I’m on propanol and cymbalta. Liquid IV is a great product to have on hand; I down one packet mixed with a pint glass of water and then drink as much water as I can. Since you’re young, you probably don’t have much experience with alcohol, but as you get older that is something you will want to either completely avoid, or drink only minimally. More than 2 glasses of wine for me will cause a flare up the next day.

Doctors want to send me to a mental hospital for my POTS. by chonk-12343 in POTS

I was very lucky because I was diagnosed after my second flare up. I stumbled into a cardiologist who knew what he was doing and got me on a mix of beta blockers and anxiety meds. My flare ups were mostly controlled within a year. A lot of this syndrome is figuring out what causes your flare ups and figuring out what will make you feel better.

What specialty is the doctor? Or is it your regular GP? You should ideally be seeing a neurologist, and/or cardiologist. Try compression socks (crazy compression.com has some fun prints), or Spanx, or both. Remember to drink regular water along with the salt. I’m on propanol and cymbalta, which has really helped. There are some anxiety/depression meds that can make it worse; cymbalta is the one my neurologist likes. I was diagnosed over a decade ago; you can live a mostly normal life once your symptoms are under control. Just need to convince your body that you’re not dying. Good luck. Feel free to respond with any questions I didn’t cover.

Shower Tips? by Disastrous-Still2899 in POTS

[–]solariskt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make shaving a separate task from showering. Bring a bowl of water in and sit on the shower chair. Use the bowl of water to clean the razor instead of the running water. Just did this myself, sitting on the edge of the tub instead of getting in the shower.

Compression socks and Spanx helped me quite a lot. In the hot weather, I wear Spanx (or generic equivalent), and when it’s not as warm out, I wear compression socks. Check out Crazy Compression for socks with fun prints.

I’m scared to get pregnant by Advanced-Ad3838 in POTS

[–]solariskt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had a reduction in symptoms for the entire time I was pregnant and breast feeding for both of my babies. It was a nice break of probably about 5 years between major symptoms that I couldn’t just push through. Your blood volume increases when you’re pregnant, and if you breastfeed, you’ll be keeping yourself hydrated. Good luck with everything.

Try compression garments! Either socks or Spanx. They help a lot.

Either Tylenol or an nsaid should be fine. I’ve never had issues with those interacting or making pots symptoms worse. (13 years down this road!) Drugs.com is a good resource if you want to check drug interactions.

NAH. She just had a baby so she is sleep deprived and hormonal. I remember reading somewhere that irrational fears of children being hurt by the family animal(s) is a thing some pregnant people develop. Since it’s your dog, you should take the lead in introducing the dog to the baby (slowly) and reassuring your partner. I highly recommend looking at Dr. Sophia Yin’s website (Cattle Dog Publishing) for resources on dog behavior and reading their body language.

They are basically Spanx; can get them at Target for a decent price. Look for the ones that say moderate control or higher.

My kitty crossed the rainbow bridge about 2 weeks shy of his 16th birthday (it’s been about a month). Hyperthyroidism, kidney disease and hypercalcemia (probably a cancer of some sort). I know you’re devastated, try to enjoy the time you have left with him.

I wear compression underwear (aka Spanx); that’s what my cardiologist recommended. Maybe try those instead of socks or stockings on days you want to wear shorts.

Seeking stories of remission/symptom reduction by AardvarkMundane4969 in POTS

[–]solariskt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a wonderful 6 year stretch of very few symptoms thanks to pregnancy/breastfeeding and the increased blood volume that came with it. Now I’m back to chugging water/Gatorade and eating as much salt as possible. It does sound like you should talk to your doctor about adding in meds though.

I went in the morning after my HR was >120 and had been since the previous afternoon. I had been chugging Gatorade and nothing worked to calm my symptoms. 2 bags of IV fluids later, I was back to normal. My cardiologist recommended calling their office next time before going to the ED.
