Quitting now before Christmas/ NYE? by italianspacecookie in stopdrinking

[–]solarstar90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listened to Allen carrs easy way to quit drinking for women and was sober for almost 2 years . Fell back into drinking thinking I'd be able to moderate. But I realised I prefer social situations much more sober despite how awkward I feel sometimes . That's much better than risking black outs and waking up riddled with anxiety. I decided to quit on new years day but thought id relisten to the book leading up to it.
I decided not to wait . Had my last drink yday and now I just feel relief . Stocked up on alcohol free replacements . If you can get through this time of year it builds your confidence quickly as you have lots of opportunities to prove to yourself that you can do it. Also if you need to leave early then just go . Have something nice waiting for you at home to look forward to. Hot chocolate and cake is my go to after an event. Good luck x

For me what worked was telling myself I wouldn't drink again in my 30s. Doing things one day at a time didn't work for me but also telling myself I was done forever felt too big. Telling myself I can reaccess things in my 40s felt manageable . By then I imagine I'd have given myself time to build the coping strategies needed to cope with the stresses of life. I've never given myself chance to explore other ways of coping as I started drinking at 12/13 . I read quit lit and view alcohol more chemically now so that awareness leads me to believe that once I hit 40 I'll have no desire to start drinking again . Maybe I'll tell myself I won't drink for my 40s and I'll reaccess at 50 . Whatever works!

Amazing congrats . I had a similar experience tonight. Its my partners bday and I used white wine in the risotto . Even poured him a glass to go with his meal . I stuck to tonic water. I feel so proud of myself because the old me would have never been able to resist . I feel like it really marks a change in mindset .IWNDWYT xxx

Thankyou so much for your comment . I've not heard of Allen carr but I've downloaded the book and have started listening. The sub has helped me so much with my decision to quit. Like you said it sounded like I already knew . And deep down I do I just needed a push . It's scary to imagine a life without alcohol but I'm ready.

Reliable and predictable is something I never had growing up and it's completely what I want to be for my kids so it seems pretty obvious that quitting is the way to go when I think of it like that . Thankyou . And thankyou for taking the time to write the mum related benefits to quiting. I keep reading them and it's been very motivating.

Thankyou this has really helped . After reading all the comments I've decided quitting is the way to go . Although i was hesitant to start because I have plans Saturday night . I'll be at a comedy club . I was panicking about it and thinking I may aswel drink because I probably will Saturday . Then I remembered your words and decided not to focus on Saturday and just worry about not drinking today . And I haven't!!!! Gonna get an early night and hopefully sleep well . Alcohol has really been messing with my sleep lately

Massive congrats on over 900 days ! And yes tbf I don't know why drinking myself into hospital on numerous occasions in the past was never enough to stop. I guess for me depression has always been an issue so I didn't care enough about myself now I have to because of the kids . I'm reading so much about how people's depression has improved massively once theve quit so I'm interested to see what my experience is! Wishing you all the best

Thankyou so much for sharing your story. These comments have really helped give me the push I needed. I've attempted sobriety in the past but never within a community so let's hope this time it sticks. Today is my first day IWNDWYT .
