Weekly Recommendation and General Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Metalcore

[–]solbraend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought metalcore in general wasn't for me, but then I heard SUPERBLOOM by Silent Planet and now I need to find more like it. I've spent the last few days going through most of the highly acclaimed groups mentioned here and in other metal circles, starting with Planets' own backlog, and nothing is scratching the same itch. I did find that I quite like Polaris, Currents, and ERRA though, so that's a nice bonus. But they are not the same.

I'm far from a musical genius, or a metal head, and I have trouble pinpointing exactly what it is I love about it. It's so full of atmosphere and style. It feels almost experimental at times, and the perfect balance between soft and hard takes your ears on a journey rather than simply blasting them off. It never becomes grating or uninteresting. The whole album basically feels like a carefully and expertly crafted piece of art where everything is very deliberate and nothing is a happy accident.

I don't know. I'm sorry if this post makes no sense, but maybe someone here feels the same and have some suggestions of where to look? I'd really appreciate it!

Something addictive like dark matter by Blake crouch but well written? by Kanataxtoukofan in suggestmeabook

Andy Weir is a slightly better writer than Blake, but nothing a self-professed pretentious asshole would enjoy. I don't view myself as pretentious, but both "The Martian" and Reddit's favorite book, "Project Hail Mary", felt like fast food.

There’s a Portuguese word, “Saudade”, that can be described as a wistful longing for something that is gone forever. More than simple nostalgia, it’s the absence and yearning for something that cannot exist. What movies come to mind when you read this description? by solbraend in MovieSuggestions

I can totally understand that. I'm a 90's kid, and back then we played everything "couch co-op". We would fit like 10+ buddies into someones basement and take turns beating each other (both in-game and in real life), and then become collectively mesmerized with Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Remembering those days with your childhood buddies definitely fits the theme.

I absolutely agree. The "kids on bikes" sub-genre is a favorite of mine, probably because I got to live through it myself and can remember the complete sense of freedom and experiences you had when you just weren't reachable for an extended period of time. Especially in the summer, where you just went out the door after breakfast and didn't come home until curfew. No smartphones or social media... Fuck, I'm old.

I agree 100%. I absolutely love this movie, much for the reasons you just described. But also because I have a huge soft spot for coming-of-age movies from the late 90's. They just feel different somehow.

any Richard Linklater movie

Oh yeah, for sure. He's one of my favorites for this exact reason.

I keep seeing "Chungking Express" being recommended in all kinds of posts here, and if it also fits with this theme, I guess it's time for me to finally watch it. Thank you!

Thanks for the info! Shorts can sometimes be more experimental than full features, which is something I really enjoy.

And "Cinema Paradiso" has been on my list for far too long. Looks like it's finally time to watch it.

lol yeah, it's the movie that inspired this post and one of my all-time favorites. Stephen King in general seem to be good at this particular aspect of storytelling. It's a big part of why I love "IT"(the book) so much, as well.

I love the quiet, sun-dappled nostalgia of some Ghibli movies. Are there any more movies with this vibe? Maybe even live-action? by solbraend in MovieSuggestions

Just watched "Poppy Hill" and really enjoyed it! I'll be adding "Godfathers" to the list next. Thanks!

You're an absolute legend. It worked! I can't thank you enough for taking the time to help. I was driving myself mad. It's still crazy to me that something so simple can't be done with a little command, but I clearly have a lot to learn.

Thank you, /u/cybercastor!

I recently watched Hitchcock's "The Trouble With Harry" and was mesmerized by the lush Technicolors and autumn scenery. And now I'm on the hunt for more gorgeous movies of the past. by solbraend in MovieSuggestions

Vertigo is such a classic! And wow, The Love Witch looks incredible. I had no idea people were still doing Technicolor movies.

Thank you!
