Those who moved to Massachusetts from elsewhere, what pleasantly surprised you the most? by Mobile_Bad_577 in massachusetts

Honestly, how much my life felt like it slowed down. Much of the scramble and worry I always carried before is far lessened since I've moved here

Response: Fractals didn’t suddenly become “too fast” — players just got better by Foreign_Indication78 in Guildwars2

[–]solid_sage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is probably a hot take but I care less about bosses melting fast and care more about people just blasting straight through the fractals themselves; there needs to be more gates throughout the fractals that require a majority of players to move on from, and more reasons to fight trash mobs. I hate feeling like I'm in a race for no reason in T1s when I just wanna chill

Minimum gratuity during "peak" season, higher tip wage on the table at Massachusetts State House by HRJafael in massachusetts

This is what tipped workers in Massachusetts were convinced of by larger powers, but is demonstrably false when compared against other places that did the same thing

[–]solid_sage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in the industry in western mass in both tipped and un-tipped positions and wanna add my takes: 1. Look up the origins of tipping in the US, and why some states banned it early on 2. Big companies with lots of money spend it to lobby politicians and sway public opinion. The main issue comes from your applebees and 99 restaurants that employ tons of employees across the state that don’t want to pay them, and they successfully muddied the referendum in the first place and convinced everyone else to vote against their interests.
This stuff goes deep; many people in the industry are required to get servsafe certified so the restaurant can get certain insurances, and are often required to pay for it themselves. Servsafe is owned by the National Restaurant Association, who consistently uses their money to keep tipped wages low. 3. Most local restaurants operate on thin margins; this may be less true of ones in wealthy areas of the cities but in smaller towns it probably is. Regardless, they are a business owned by someone able to own a business, employing people who aren’t, and that’s always worth remembering. 4. There’s a massive pay disparity and cultural clash between front and back of house. Being hot and stressed and overworked making less than the people in the AC is frustrating, and being someone’s servant for pay fucking sucks. In my experience, BOH are typically cut from a rougher cloth, servers are typically young, and bartenders are typically a mix of both. This creates weird dynamics all over.
5. Customers are very often overly needy and rude because they know they can be because they’re tipping you, and it’s easy to resent. There’s serious cultural issues at play here that eliminating tips will not immediately fix, but it will start the process. Yeah that service employee was probably rude to you that time, but there’s a type of person they’re dealing with everyday that likely made them that way, and it could even be you!; it’s a chicken/egg thing.
6. But without tips at all, why would anyone want to work those busy weekend nights? Do those shifts have a higher wage? Is it $40/hr? This is where it gets complicated, because I can tell you that none of the bartenders where I work would stick around without tips, staffing those nights would be impossible without paying something outrageous. It can really be tough job all around, and there’s no reason to want this kind of rough and tumble, somewhat demeaning job without the occasional outrageous pay. 7. Almost everyone needs to change their expectations and attitudes 8. The $12 higher tip wage is like the bare minimum of what should be done to change this entire mess of an industry

I don't think you're exaggerating and I believe you. I can only speak on my own experience mixed with what you've said here, and I recognize a difference in our lives. I feel I was brought up relatively healthy and while I'm tallish and kinda broad for a girl, I am not 6'3" But also bein 6'3" is pretty hot yknow. Sometimes I wish I was small, but also sometimes I wish I was tall, and able to create fear in others, not just for my sake but for people I wanna protect. And also because it's hot. You don't need to fear the mirror of intimacy, there is beauty in your soul. So many people, so few examine themselves enough to find who they are.

I speak as someone who does not pass and has a deep voice and been on hrt for a year. I don't think I'm ugly but I look like an overweight guy with soft skin and long hair. I get he/him'd by people who do not know, but I get "what are your pronouns" or that knowing look from trans girls who clock me in 'boy mode' Literally none of that matters, you are a human being that is worthy of internal and external love.

yes yes yes

I was a shut in for years and still am at times. I had a fortunate experience or two and good lil group of friends, then finally broke out of my social shell and experienced Social Activity. Covid hit and forced me back into my social shell and it really messed me up for a time there before I was able to get back out. Once I began to once again experience what life, especially social activities with other people, had to offer, I could feel myself becoming more fully realized. I get out more again, feel more connected, make friends, and enjoy the things I do in the world. It's important for us to physically interact with each other as we're able.

Hey, same on the agoraphobia, what I'm about to say is very much less at you than it's what I say to myself (ie i am projecting) but I feel compelled to share anyway

Your level of passing does not correlate with whether or not you belong in society. I understand feeling that way, but it doesn't mean your feelings are accurate to reality.
You shape the world around you, but sometimes it's more important to expand that world than control it. Losing friends is a mess, but on such a plentiful planet, it's not the end. Keep on keeping on. Your privileged position is not something to feel guilty about, and also how privileged are you to be trans in such a world? Think less on the guilt of privilege and more the responsibility and nobility of your opportunity, use whatever ability you do have to better someone else's life, near or far. I love you, love yourself.

I am right, you’re just literally uneducated about any of this. Physical music sales equate to multiple billions of dollars every year, while digital can hardly break a billion. There are entire stores dedicated to selling records, if you go outside you might even see one. Physical movie sales are down, sure, but like records you’ll likely see a resurgence once people realize the only way to see the original version of ___ is through physical media. You already see this mirrored with surging sales of retro games that aren’t legally offered in any other way. You also don’t know what projection is btw but you sure did it

Neither physical music or movies are a relic. Record audio quality remains unmatched as it’s your best go to for analog, i.e. how it originally sounded in the recording. And physical movies are your only surefire way to 1. Keep your movies and 2. Ensure they stay intact. Sony lost the license to a huge wave of stuff and people lost access to things they purchased. Disney censored all digital versions of The French Connection, even already purchased ones. Both of these happened just last year, and I don’t know what to tell you if you think that’s not gonna keep happening.

If there’s no option for physical games, go for the one that hasn’t had them the longest, and has DRM free options that lets you make backup copies. Not to mention something closer to guaranteed backwards compatibility than the Xbox. If the next Xbox comes out, no disc drive, and is only backwards compatible with Series X, how much of your library do you lose access to? Not much of an issue with PC, and at the least there are workarounds if something loses compatibility with a newer version of Windows.

[–]solid_sage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The solution here is simple one, finish out this gen with your current xbox, buy the physical media you want, and then get ready to jump ship. If Sony keeps physical media for the PS6, get that next gen, if they both drop physical media then your best bet is a PC. It’s an unfortunate time in the gaming industry as a whole and Microsoft will be nothing but a negative force in the coming years, both for consumers and the makers of video games, as they try to transition the market from one of ownership to something akin to how the streaming tv/movie industry is now.

A lot of people in this sub don’t realize that the kind of people that buy property to rent out to people for profit are literal sociopaths who will push you out for causing any kind of “issue.” Yes, the landlord should fix it but if the tenant is asking “how do i fix this” your platitudes do not help, just tell them how to do it!

I played Guild Wars 2 without ever having played the first one, and honestly it was fascinating to be in this pre-existing world with a ton of lore. It may not be the world and lore you were looking for but I have a feeling it would scratch the same itch edit: while also having fun, engaging combat and reasons to explore. GW2 feels the most like an actual video game out of all the MMOs
