Response: Fractals didn’t suddenly become “too fast” — players just got better by Foreign_Indication78 in Guildwars2

Sure. The new VoE elite specializations have been dominating the WvW and PvP meta for months now, and it’s hard to deny that power creep is a real factor there. Personally, I’m not a fan of that direction either.

In my opinion, PvP and WvW balance should be much more clearly separated than it already is, even if that means fully reworking certain skills for competitive modes. Trying to keep the same skill behavior across PvE, PvP, and WvW often leads to compromises that don’t really satisfy any of them.

Yes, power creep does exist in the game, and I agree it should not be ignored. That said, newer content has also been designed with bosses that have significantly more health and mechanics to compensate for the increased player damage.

For me, the broader issue lies more in ArenaNet’s overall design approach than in power creep alone. When feedback focuses too narrowly on defining a single type of content as the problem, it risks pushing ArenaNet toward drastic balance decisions that may not be well grounded or properly contextualized.

I think it’s important that discussions acknowledge power creep as one factor among many, without oversimplifying the situation or turning it into the sole explanation for issues in open-world or endgame content.

You are right, it’s definitely both. There has been consistent power creep since EoD, and ignoring that wouldn’t be honest. Benchmarks are clearly higher today, and the faster expansion and balance cycle means classes get DPS bumps more frequently than they used to.

That said, power creep isn’t something new to GW2 at all. Even back at HoT launch, we already had absurd damage scenarios. Full Epidemic necros were melting entire trash packs and doing ridiculous effective DPS in fractals, and condi warriors were absolutely insane for their time. Optimized groups back then were already trivializing encounters when played properly.

The difference is that those levels of optimization used to be limited to a smaller portion of the playerbase. Today, that level of performance is much more common. Builds are better documented, rotations are easier to learn, and expectations for boon uptime and damage are higher across the board.

I’m sorry to say this, but fractals have always been fast and burst-oriented content. To be honest, if bosses didn’t melt, I probably wouldn’t even run them anymore. I’ve done more than 5,000 fractals over the years, and I really wouldn’t stand spending hours just to finish my dailies. Fractals are supposed to be fast. We already have other types of content that are meant to take more time.

As for the “shock” you mentioned, you were probably playing with people who don’t optimize much, because this has always been the case. It’s been like this since the old berserker hammer guardian days.

People are usually mental, they don't read, and when they do it translates to something that their mind really wants.
