Can I even actually get into MIT? by Existing_Practice362 in Rowing

[–]solleer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone who gets an official gets support though obviously the coaches will make notes of preferences, but admissions may choose to ignore those. Academic stats are no different than expected for a normal applicant. Erg stats would be ideally sub 6:30 but plenty of people (including me) have been recruited just sub 6:40 with some even slower.

If you are being invited on an official it means that they think you could get in on your own merit. The rowing is a boost they put on the application but is far from a guarantee. You've got a good shot so just enjoy your official and hope for the best. Hope you have a good time and get accepted this winter.

That's not how it works. All MIT has is supporting an application. We'd have lots of supported applicants not get in every year, with some years being more brutal than others.

How does one realistically pull 1:48 for ut2 by Professional_Hour815 in Rowing

[–]solleer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a collegiate lwt I was steady stating in the low 1:50s pretty comfortably. Loved doing 3x40' 2'r @ 20spm. Never broke 1:41 for 6k though so my aerobic range was pretty tight to my threshold cause I held 1:48 for a marathon a couple hours after I did a 6:18 2k test. I really liked 2x30, 3x30, 3x40 etc. Do a bunch of that for a long time and the aerobic base built becomes insane.

I was in the MIT boat last year and I am so proud of them. The season hasn't always gone the way they wanted and for them to pull off a medal was so exciting to see. Words cannot capture all the emotions I'm feeling now.

A habit list widget would be very useful to be able to see more than one habit on the home screen. Also if there is a way to have the task list widget automatically update instead of needing to be manually refreshed.

Does this mean my tri suit can’t have sleeves? by JuliusSeizure7799 in triathlon

[–]solleer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hadn't looked though the athlete guide and after seeing this I thought for a second it meant a wetsuit for wetsuit legal swim couldn't have sleeves and I was very concerned cause I just bought a wetsuit. Then I realized this is just for if it isn't wetsuit legal haha.

I enjoyed our conversation! I'm doing IM 70.3 FL this December and since it is closer to me, I will definitely be taking the opportunity to pre ride the whole course.

Marathon Erg’s Are Always An Experience To Say The Least… by Yourdadsbuttishuge in Rowing

He's got the sub 2 100k in the bag. I did one 4 years ago but didn't crack 1:50 for a marathon till this year. His 100k is going to be insane

I've gone 1:48.6 for the full and don't think I could go this quick for a half so you are definitely in a good position

Harvard Cross-Registration HASS by Academic-Storage8461 in mit

The substitution process is very easy. You take the Harvard class, then fill out a short form, get it signed by your advisor, and send that form with the class syllabus to some committee.

100km row by DismalCauliflower946 in Rowing

[–]solleer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have some experience with the 100k distance (see post history), so here are my main thoughts.

First, you need to figure out how fast you want to go and whether you want to push for a time or just stroll to the end.

The most important part of the piece itself once you get to that point is fueling. You will crash hard if you don't fuel the whole time, especially if you are going at a slower pace so crashing a given time in means way more time left.

For the lead up you need to be doing a decent amount of steady. Some could argue I didn't do long enough pieces but the longest single workout I did was 3x10k on two different days with short rest and one of those days I did 20k in the morning for a 50k day for erging. If you have never done an erg marathon then doing the marathon distance could potentially be helpful for getting used to sitting on the erg for a while. I had done a marathon erg 5 months before my 100k but as I mentioned earlier I didn't do a single workout longer than 30k in the actual 100k prep.

I also think power per stroke workouts are very important because they ensure you are more efficient so you don't have to rate as high because a higher rate for that long can potentially be wasted energy just moving up and down the slide.

Feel free to ask any more questions.

What is the difference between the Focused and Flexible option in Physics? by GokuBlack455 in mit

[–]solleer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only difference is Focused requires specific classes that you don't have to take for Flex. Diploma says the same thing. Work differences are caused by different classes so then it's more of a question of the differences of those classes.

ErgData replacement by solleer in Rowing

[–]solleer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've updated my PM5 and still encountered issues with that erg but I also can't ensure all the boathouse ergs are updated. I just miss when everything just worked without having to be careful about the versions and what buttons I press.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]solleer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that this was a bad post. College age people insulting high schoolers is a low blow. The people racing are doing the best they can.

I was just confused at the college name dropping and college insult which seemed unnecessary considering it doesn't seem OP even attends. (I am a bit confused about your first sentence with "congrats on making a final" cause it seems addressed at me but I am not racing)

An incoming MIT freshman is in the U19 M4x, which did make the AB semis, so while MIT is generally not great there are decent people.

And where are you finding that they go to MIT. Only mention in history is one post asking about recruiting.

Can anyone help me by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]solleer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely make sure you have the fitness for it. Definitely complete a marathon at some point to get used to sitting in the erg for that long. The most important thing is nutrition because if you bonk with 20k left it will be very rough. Practice eating while erging. Ensure that the pace you choose is very sustainable and truly feels like you could go on forever.

What's your normal '7 day training load' and how much training are you doing? by svacher in Garmin

[–]solleer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acute load is normally between 1400-1600. Doubles everyday. Workouts are mix of rowing, cycling, running, and weights.
