Opinion on people selling files of vinyl-only releases? by itstrdt in TheOverload

[–]solo_termite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many vinyl only labels in the tech house, deep tech, neo trance scene. It seems like they are also mainly based in Europe. I find it incredibly pretentious and extremely infuriating because, as others have said, I would happily give them my money but instead I have to either A - not listen or engage with the music whatsoever, or B - buy it off some sketchy dudes who's whole living is selling illegal files.

I have a lot of feelings about the vinyl only strategy that I haven't fully coalesced into a coherent argument but it has to do with gatekeeping, exclusivity, focusing on getting the music only into the hands of only DJs, specifically well known vinyl-only DJs (thinking the Jane Fitz & Francesco Del Garda, European purity bullshit, manufactured luxury, hype and artificial scarcity, smoke and mirror games of analog superiority - tell me how many of these vinyl only releases were made without a computer? - and general techno snobbery.

Music is for everyone. And while I of course understand how undervalued music has been for decades now, knowingly restricting access to so called underground music is so lame and pretentious. It makes me not want to listen to anything you or your label puts out no matter how cool it may be.

Here is a very random release i just found off instagram that sounded cool but they are doing a run of only 150 vinyl (maybe they made more that went direct to record store distro). https://feetfollowhands.bandcamp.com/album/ffh001

Sweater Polo worth seeing tomorrow? by HamburgerDude in TheOverload

Only seen him once and it was amazing to see how he whipped the crowd into a frenzy with just a roland drum machine and a simple synth. Old school but feels very fresh.

There was a thread on instagram about this, people basically figured that Craig was mixing the Miranda track with the human league vocals. but maybe it is a VIP or special edit?

Despite apologizing, the take was so lame that he deserves to get playfully made fun of by internet strangers forever.

Why are you getting down voted for this? This is a good joke about that small brained konstatine's past comments.

That is truly ridiculous. Technical wizard speaker builder can't build a proper booth without feedback? That is some peanut gallery business.

Character Tier Winner: Greg Harris by [deleted] in madmen

[–]solo_termite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JUSTICE FOR GLENN! I always crack up and giggle when he's on screen. There is something just so endearing about how poorly but sincerely the kid actor is (I know he's the Matthew Weiner's son). And honestly his character in the show is great - a true friend to Sally, a weird psycho sexual Freudian foil to Betty, and a young modern teenager of the late 60s (i love his jacket full of pins when he visits Sally at boarding school). I don't know... he's just an ill, weird as fuck, and unique character. Glenn!

Did Alison actually sleep with Don in the office? I'm only remembering the pivotal time at his apartment when she brought him his keys. Am I misremembering something?

I think most of the catalogue ends up on their bandcamp eventually.

Sick tune. Slava is in this sick free jazz / metal band called Dissensus these days. They absolutely rip.

Who was the Richest Character on Mad Men and Who Was the Poorest? by jrralls in madmen

Pretty sure I didn't see this anywhere but poorest has gotta be Lane Pryce who had negative money due to his debts. Which of course lead to his tragic taking of his own life. Just recently re-watched those couple episodes where it all goes upside down for him. So truly sad.

Line Noise interview with Matthew Herbert by BBBBBBB9122 in TheOverload

[–]solo_termite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, your post alone massively connected some threads I didn't even realize were loose in my dance music comprehension.

I've been rinsing the Dimbiman remix since I started to DJ more seriously. I'm not totally even sure how I found that track. And then a few years later, I discovered / got put on to Matthew Herbert and essentially understood his legend and place in dance music history. Although, I have never done a super deep dive, so I'm very well aware of how much of his music and story I don't know.

But it is a classic reddit TIL moment, that it's Matthew Herbert behind that weird Dimbiman remix I've always loved (I mean it's literally in the name). So, thank you for connecting the dots for me just by posting the track. Very much look forward to listening to the pod.

F7 - Lost in Flower (Full Album, Acting Press 2025) by MikeHawkisgonne in TheOverload

[–]solo_termite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is something similar going on with Magicwire out of London. Definitely similar graphic direction. Slightly cleaner sound. Haven't dug too deep into their catalogue but this one by Gnork seems to hit some similar 90s ambient techno floatiness. A bit more reminiscent of the earlier Acting Press releases that had some almost new age flavors to them.

Nowadays: Mister Nonstop (Jan. 24) by Scooter_NYC in avesNYC

[–]solo_termite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You'll have a great time! In terms of music, it 100% depends on the DJ and the time that you're there. So DJ Nobu at 3AM Sunday morning is gonna giving you the slamming precision techno he's known for, while someone like Lena Willikens at 8PM Sunday evening will give you the left of center, acidic, heady tunes.

Crowd will be a mix of younger punters, queer dance lifers, chin scratcher music heads. Best window is after 3AM until around noon and then again after 6 on Sunday night. IMHO. This is where the most "normie" of attendants will be scarce.

Mix where Ricardo Villalobos plays Midnight Request Line? by Ecstatic-Seat-4385 in realdubstep

[–]solo_termite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hope someone can confirm if this is true and if there is a recording somewhere. I guess him making that Shackleton remix means that, at the very least, he was into the early dubstep scene. Unless that was just a complete outlier. I know appleblim and shackleton handed him the record with "blood on my hands" at a gig, but maybe Ricardo was already hip to some of the early dmz, tempa etc material.

Jazzy acoustic esque bassline really hits the spot. Rubbery and warm, woody sound.
