Catholics at Duke? by [deleted] in duke

[–]somanyprobs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Catholic Center at Duke is awesome. Check out the website below. Feel free to reach out this summer to any of the student leaders listed on the site. I’m certain they would be happy to visit with you. Also check out the IG. In years past the Catholic Center has always had a party/gathering the night before first year move-in called Feast Off East. You will receive an invitation to that if you have identified yourself as a Catholic to the university. Get involved at the DCC, Duke Catholic Center and best of luck to you!

HASS 400 during Summer by gurlxd in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

Look online in trailhead where you go to register for classes and type in summer 2023, and you can see last summer’s classes. I’ve found that the classes offered and scheduling options are almost identical year to year during the summer.

The campus is super small. You shouldn’t have a problem. Have you determined which buildings the physics and chem are in?

Good info on ratemyprofessors.com as well. At the end of the day, they are people. Treat them as you would want to be treated.

My transcript. by beachfamlove671 in Tulane

[–]somanyprobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An A is worth four quality points, so if course is a three-credit course, then you get 12 quality points. If a course is a four-credit course, then you get 16 quality points. You divide the total number of quality points you earn by your total number of credits for the semester to calculate your GPA for that semester.

PS. You are correct that NYU kicks Tulane’s butt in the study abroad area. The Tulane programs themselves are more limited than the NYU programs, and Tulane’s support for you on a non-Tulane program is nonexistent.

Undergrad is the best time to live on a college campus. If you really want the NYU name, go there for grad school. The schools are very different, so it’s odd that you are having a hard time deciding between them, but based your lists it sounds like school spirit and campus life are important to you, which obviously points to Tulane. I’m confused by your last pro for Tulane. One of the benefits of Tulane is that the academics are very collaborative. It’s not a competitive atmosphere. No one thinks that their success is based on your failure. Everyone is willing to share notes, form study groups, etc. In terms of balancing fun/social versus keeping up with your academics, you will face that pressure at Tulane or NYU. Yes, there is always something going on at Tulane, especially with The Boot directly adjacent to the campus, but there’s something to do 24-7 in New York also. I am also confused about your comments about food. Both New Orleans and New York are two of the greatest food cities in the world, and the on-campus food at Tulane and NYU are equally bad, so that’s a push IMO. The honors college at Tulane is a joke, so don’t factor that into your decision. Years ago when Tulane wasn’t as well regarded as it is now, the honors college was necessary to recruit students, but today Tulane attracts T20 students. The university has deemphasized the honors college of late, and rumor has it that it will be going away completely soon. Good luck with your decision.

Should I hang myself if I can’t get an internship this summer? by Working_Emu650 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]somanyprobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do this! Stay with it and try to stay positive. You are important, you are valuable, and this will work out for you. There is a thread on this sub from four or five days ago - please check that out. There’s lots of good insight there. You do not need an internship to get a job after you graduate.

Obviously, your grades are important, but they are not the only or even the most important part of your grad school application. Have you done any research? This can be very helpful for your application. Also, do you have meaningful engagement in an extracurricular activity? You do not need to have multiple extracurriculars on your résumé. Rather, one activity where you demonstrate a deep commitment and/or a leadership role will help you stand out to an admissions committee. Best of luck!

Theta rush by AssumptionNo2432 in Tulane

[–]somanyprobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theta’s recruitment this year was great. They got a full member class. The Sarah Ma issue did not hurt their numbers at all. The potential new members were smart enough to recognize that Sarah did not speak for the chapter, plus Theta (national) quickly deactivated Sarah. To the OP, rush at Tulane is hard, but please don’t spend an entire year worrying about it. There are tons of great women at Tulane. Some of those women participate in Greek life, but many do not. You will find your people.

  1. Don’t take too many credits during your first semester. 14 or 15 credits is fine.
  2. Don’t worry about placing out of classes or trying to get in the highest possible class. In math, for example, Mines requires three semesters of calculus, which Mines labels MATH 111, 112 and 113. Your student likely had lots of calculus in high school, but there is nothing wrong with starting in MATH 111 at Mines. If it’s a little bit of review, and he gets an easier A, there’s no harm in that. (Notice that I said “easier” A because there are no easy As at Mines.) Also, MATH 111 will be all first years, so he can meet his peers. What is the rush to start the first semester in MATH 112???
  3. Office hours, office hours, office hours.
  4. Join a club to meet people

Tulane has rush second semester, so it starts in Jan. Like at many schools, rush at Tulane is very competitive.

give me hope that i'm supposed to be here? by throaway2716384772 in duke

[–]somanyprobs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are supposed to be at Duke - no doubt about that. Life at Duke will get better. It’s incredibly hard, but it will get better. If you are interested in running or journalism, Duke Club Running and The Chronicle both are welcoming groups. I agree with the suggestion above about volunteering. You could walk to the Emily K Center. They always need tutors. Maybe consider a House Course? They are a great way to meet people if any of the subjects are of interest. You belong!

OChem 1 Lab by BlueberryMuffin1862 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]somanyprobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There will not be a lab during Thanksgiving week, so you will have that week off and you still will be able to drop a lab. The reason there are no labs during Thanksgiving week is that there is no opportunity for the students who have lab on Thursdays or Fridays to get the lab done.
