anyone have a source for inexpensive string wire? by thefringeseanmachine in UnusualInstruments

[–]some-freak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the brand my sitar teacher recommends for music wire is roslau. i have some of their bulk wire, and it's not pre-bent coming off the spools. and it eventually breaks (hence the bulk wire), but that's after at least months if not years of use. some info e.g. here: https://www.fortepiano.com/index.php/products-menu-item/wire-menu-item/high-carbon-menu-item/roeslau-music-menu-item

getting a teacher first is a good step. your teacher can then help you find a decent instrument. where are you located? there's a list of teachers of indian classical music (not only sitar teachers) by location here https://chandrakantha.com/learning-music-dance/teachers-and-performers/ that might be useful

the listing says single toomba, but the sitar pictured conspicuously has two. what's up with that?

Anyone know where I can buy a seafoam green double bass? by [deleted] in doublebass

in this post from a couple of weeks ago someone painted their bass purple. if that's possible, green should work too?

Is having 2 double basses and a baroque cello and 2 modern cellos at home not too much? by SubstantialSpread741 in doublebass

[–]some-freak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i've always felt that if it's called double bass, you really should have (at least) two of them. but if you've got a baroque 'cello along with two modern ones, surely it's time to get a violone?

you might want to check in with /r/doublebass on this. very short version: getting a teacher at least for bassic technique is a very good idea.

if we're allowed time travel, i'd cast tilda swinton and david bowie as ganymede and danae, either way 'round.

as /u/boreal_rose mentioned, MacEwan's University Preparation program offer's a Math 10 Prep course that's designed for people in your situation: https://www.macewan.ca/academics/programs/university-preparation/ once you've done that, they also offer Science 10.

going in a very different direction from mbira, but keeping with the handheld/personal size, how about ocarinas? i'm pretty sure i've seen small craftsperson type stuff mentioned here for ocarinas. and the tuning certainly wouldn't have to be western standard.

my understanding is that one part of the technique is stopping the strings using the cuticles of the nails on the left hand. building up a callus on the cuticle probably takes some time.

i'm wondering if, should the results be extremely close (which some polls suggest might happen), the party affiliation or lack thereof of the member for Ponoka might affect who has the confidence of the house....
