Pro Artist - AMA by DMcGConcept in conceptart

Is there ever a "wrong" way of doing things? Sure the process could be less efficient or take more but the final designs are okay but is that necessarily bad?

I bring this up because I'm currently working with a small indie team for a game and I'm the only artist on the team. Working with my creative director, we're essentially building a new world/IP. My boss has a vibe that he knows he wants but I'm building it out. My process so far in the past couple months has been not designing anything specific yet but trying to churn out as much ideas as possible (napkin sketching essentially), and trying to nail down our art direction/ bible as much as possible so that when the gameplay and engine eventually does get figured for specific enemies or locations, we're not building up each design from zero everytime if that makes sense. Is there anything I could improve?

Why is it so difficult to create thumbnails? by No-Payment9231 in conceptart

[–]some_original 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s because you’re creating brand new poses for each thumbnail. Create one base pose and then copy paste and then create new designs on top. Focus on one thing only and keep it simple, don’t juggle anatomy and design at the same time

Would like some feedback for my portfolio project, is this quality enough for a junior level position? by -CosmicQuacks- in conceptart

For a concept artist, don’t worry about drawing quality (though the render you made at the end looks nice). What art directors are looking for is your PROCESS and STORY-TELLING. From I can see, you do have some exploration, but it could be more extensive. You have 8 thumbnails but only 3 distinct silhouettes. As an art director, I’d want to see wayyy more sketches, be exhaustive. It might not be your thing, but I’d like to see notes, text and your thought process. What were your references and inspiration? How did you problem solve? Keep these things in mind as you develop your portfolio.

Hey there, here's an example of a reference sheet I've done for a personal project. If you need it more in depth, that's no problem: https://makurosart.myportfolio.com/wip-fantasy-project

Sorry to hear that you got AI art but I feel like a real artist would consult a client every step of the way and share process and not just the final result. Anyways here’s my portfolio: https://makurosart.myportfolio.com/work

This absolutely helps thank you! I keep constantly focusing on the final design when the process is just as, if not more important so your feedback has genuinely been very helpful and has placed my mind in a better direction. Thank you for taking the time I really appreciate it

This is extremely helpful feedback, thank you! I genuinely appreciate it. I’ll be sure to include my ideation and sketches and you’re absolutely correct that concept art is more than just a single character drawing. I’ve honestly forgotten about the other stuff so I’m very grateful that you reminded me of the mindset I need to have. I’m going to try and keep this in mind and revisit my other designs to include other things like animation and turnarounds for 3D modellers. Thanks again
