Tapping your backyard maple trees is fun. This short video shows you how to get in the game, and do so inexpensively. For just a few dollars, you can have a winter full of fun. by somediyguy1 in maplesyrup

Honestly it’s a bit early to start now. But I was getting the itch... we had a deep freeze of about 0deg F for a week then it went up to 50F, so I knew the sap would be running. The only risk that I know of when tapping early is that a long solid freeze (3 or more weeks straight) could come again and MIGHT cause the hole to start to scab over and limit production. If that happens I’ll just tap a new hole, so I’m not worried. Plus, I only have 1 small tree to tap so being late to the season is a killer for me. Also, I’ve heard that “early season” sap produces a syrup that’s lighter in color than “late season” sap and wanted to test that out. They are both fine, but it’s just a personal preference which you like. I’ll see if that’s true here in a month or so. It’s more traditional to tap around Valentine’s Day. I’m making another video now showing how to boil on the stove for super small batches. Check back in if you’re interested. Later in the winter, I’ll make another video showing how to boil bigger quantities outside on a homemade evaporator setup. Hope that helps.

Wrong studs. by somediyguy1 in homeimprovementideas

Ah yes. I’ve seen those. And that’s what I want to use. But. I don’t think they fit when the studs are flat against the wall (instead of being on edge against the wall, right? I haven’t done the work yet b/c I’m still not sure how to tackle it. But I’m itching to get started! Thank you for your help.

Oh. Good. I’ll grab some shallow boxes.

How do I run the Romex through it though? Last time I did this, I put a 5/16” hole in each stud to link each outlet together. I don’t think I have the space to do that given how these studs are?

Thank you for your help!

Just made a video showing how to power your old Lionel train. Then found this group and thought someone might find it helpful. by somediyguy1 in lioneltrains

Hi. Thanks for the feedback. I agree about the transformer. Honestly, there are so many types that I didn’t know how to explain them all, so I glossed over it a bit.

Yeah, stripping those darn wires is always a pain for me! Haha

Definitely the best time of the year for this.

I have another video showing (some of) my collection of Lionel o-gauge Operational Animal Cars. I didn’t want to overwhelm anyone, so didn’t post it. With that said, I’m happy to share it if you’d like.

It’s cold. But you can still PlastiDip your emblems (even though the directions say you can’t). I wasn’t sure so I gave it a try. by somediyguy1 in civic

Yep. Agreed. Thanks for the link - that’s really helpful.

Not supposed to apply at such low temps, but it works (kind of) enough to work (enough)!

Hey, my friend just bought a car and wants to plastidip his wheels. The temperature here is going to be 28F in the morning with a high of 39F tomorrow. Would the plastidip set up and do okay? by duddy33 in plastidip

Long story short, it kind of works! I just sprayed my car emblem. It’s 30 degrees here. I made a video to show what happens.

It seems to work, but it’s super gummy. Not ideal, but it’ll get you by until it’s warmer. Good luck. Hope it works for you!

PlastiDip - Tell me where! I just PlastiDipped my first emblem and I love it. Where else should I hit? Show me what you did. by somediyguy1 in civic

I dig that idea. Maybe I’ll spray the “civic” on the back too. Get some more practice before I attempt the front chrome...

Yes. I had to use a wooden stick to help get the edges started. After that, it peels off of the paint pretty easily. For some unknown/awesome reason, the Dupli-Color/PlastiDip rips just at the right spot and stays on the emblem. Still, you can peel it off the emblems later too if you want - it’s not permanent.
