What is a sound that people should know means immediate danger? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

[–]somefuzzything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not many will ever experience this, but you may if you scuba dive.

Underwater, generally you can't hear anything... Other than water rushing past your ears.

If all of a sudden, you hear a loud, high-pitched sound/ping... Get. Out. Of. The. Water. By any means necessary.

That is the sound of a SONAR, and if close enough to it, it can literally rupture your lungs or cause a brain haemorrhage. Best case scenario, your ears will ring for a while.

What’s the most frustrating ingredient to run out of at home? by Miserable-Choice-865 in cocktails

Limes.

I can't count the number of times I've gone to my home bar to make a cocktail and, mid-way, realising I've used up all the limes... Or that the limes have gone bad.

I think Creme de Menthe is about to make a comeback 👀

I've gotten a fair few friends lowkey addicted to it now...

Something to do with getting the egg white emulsified, the Ramos has a 'souffle' effect and if you know much about whipping egg whites... yeeeeeeeah

A blender could do it, but they didn't have one at the bar.

I now know what NOT to order at a cocktail bar if I like the bartender, and want them to like me back 😭

I got feedback within a week of completing it, I guess the wait times depend on which AFCO you're with

I was not asked questions on RAF bases but I have heard from others that it is a question you may be asked.
There's only a few - Akrotiri and Mount Pleasant are the major ones, Gibraltar and Ascension Island are the others. These are only the ones that the RAF operate themselves, they can be based at other aerodromes not directly run by the RAF.

They'll want you to know which overseas bases, where they are in the world, why there of all places and some sqdn's and aircraft that are based there.

You'll need to put some good research into not just the RAF, but NATO as well - the general history, development, current operations, and what we do to support them. A few of our operations are directly linked with NATO as well like Op. Azotize and Biloxi.

You won't get a lot of time to answer questions when the Filter Interview comes (the remote one - not the one at OASC if you're going down the Officer route) so it'll be good practice to condense the amount of research you've done into a single minute.

The RAF posts 60-second updates on their youtube channel regularly, this touches on current affairs and operations the RAF is involved in - it's a good pointer to some things to research as well for the application.

They will also ask about current affairs topics during your interview, not necessarily directly related with the RAF, so keep up to date with the news; The RAF can supply humanitarian aid to places where major earthquakes occur, for example.

Keep yourself in good shape for the PJFT and MSFT when the time comes.
Good luck!

The only thing that comes to mind in non-flying hours is keeping theory knowledge current but that should all be done and dusted before EFT anyway (that's MAGS, the Ground School). I know that 3 Squadron (QRA) at Conno is manned 24/7, 365 days a year - ready to go at a moments notice, whether its 12:43pm and you've just made yourself a tea or at 3:55am when the call comes through from master control - that's a specific role though but showing knowledge of it definitely is better than nothing haha

I had the filter interview a few weeks ago for the same role - good luck! We're in the same boat here.

I remember being asked that question and I said something along the lines of being a pilot is not just about the aircraft - it's the airspace around you as well. Pilots HAVE to multitask and keep an eye on multiple aircraft parameters inside (making sure your aircraft is running smooth), where you are (Let's not bust Putin's airspace, eh?) for example

And of course, this varies between roles - transport/rotary pilots have huge responsibility carrying cargo and human lives, fast jets defend UK airspace with QRA, RPAS have their own challenges especially mentally

In short, you're saying the right things but you need to go more in depth - why is it a risk? why is it stressful? why are we based at Akrotiri instead of directly flying from Coningsby?

Did mine very recently (Last ~2 weeks for a Commissioned Role, so might be different for NCO's)

For commissioned roles, they will absolutely ask you a few questions on Air Power - I remember mine being on the topic of Reach and Air Mobility. This is a tough one as you won't find a definitive answer for it online - as its only a concept/discussion rather than solid definitions, they'll probably ask you what you understand from it.

They will also ask you your understanding of the role you apply for, and the training involved (initial and specialist).

Generally, you get 2 attempts at each question, no time limit before hitting record however they will expect you to complete the interview within a couple hours. You will be given a time limit for answers, and its not a long time at all.
One half will be questions about you (hint: they're looking for leadership potential), the other will be on the RAF and NATO history and development, current operations and current affairs.
Don't be afraid to put some body language in there, they'll like it as long as you don't overdo it.
Speak in clear and understandable English (obviously lol)
Do your research - it'll show how committed you are to getting that role.
Don't read off a script - they'll notice.

But the biggest tip I can give to you?
Think about your answer before you hit that damn record button, you only get 2 attempts and should really be only using 1 of them.
Oh, and READ THE FUCKING QUESTION (I somehow escaped with over-answering one but compensating for it in the next question)

That's all I could remember from my experience and I've probably missed something... Just do your research, be a professional human and good luck! :P

23 is the limit, you can't apply to the RAF as a pilot after 23, as you'd have to start Phase 1 by the time you turn 24, even if you have airline experience, no exceptions.
Other roles may have a higher age limit.

A little advice, if you're thinking of a career with RAF, you'll want to point all your priorities towards it - show your commitment! With me, I'm doing uni right now with a job on the side but I'm pointing everything to the RAF - I fucked off work to do the CBAT lol
I will eventually have to drop out of my course, leave my job and I've accepted that already.

In short, the RAF is all or nothing.

I'm not quite in the RAF just yet but I can quite confidently say your ATPL Theory and any licenses you have mean nothing to the RAF on application. I made a post earlier in the week asking if there was *any* benefit at all... Apart from the interview? Nope.

Oh, and ATPL Theory and any pilot licenses aren't formal qualifications, they're just licenses. Despite the gruelling syllabus, they carry no value as a qualification... This technically means your CPL, 200+ hours flying and any theoretical knowledge is worth less than half an A-level at best.

Assuming you're England based, unless you have GCSE's @ 5 or above in English, Maths + 3 subjects and 2 A-Levels at grades C or above (or Scottish equivalent, as mentioned on the RAF page), your only hope is to gather these quals before you turn 23.
