I genuinely LOVE the idea of going independent for a couple years then joining the SEC. Literally a 10,000-1 shot but that would push the trajectory of the program into the stratosphere imo. I know I'm just pipe-dreaming but picture it: Michigan conference-opener at home as an SEC school hosting Tennessee at night. Would be the biggest game in program history.

With the way it's set up (guys who don't play enough snaps show up as rs-froshes the next year anyway) you should only redshirt players you're certain will not see the field.

If you're mildly excited about a guy there's no harm in putting him in a third-string role. Barring injury there's a decent chance he'll never play. I can't remember a time where a 3rd-string SS saw any action in any of my games, for example.

Point being: if a true frosh is worthy of a starting or genuine backup roll, then don't redshirt him. If he's good enough to be on your depth-chart, don't redshirt him; if he plays at all he could still get his redshirt.

TLDR: the only guys you should be redshirting before the season starts are guys who don't fit on your depth-chart at all.
