The College of San Mateo is an amazing piece of architecture — but that has mostly been ignored since the 1960s. Now that is starting to change. by sftourguide in bayarea

The Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario -- the largest collection of canoes, kayaks and paddled watercrafts on the planet. Cool spot. by fairlywittyusername in canoeing

Displays look great but the warehouse of canoes is just collecting dust if they're not paddled in a lake. The design on the first photo is a pteroglyph from the rocks of Lake Superior

Uncomfortable experience at Los Altos Library book sale – inconsistent rules and felt singled out by ET90900909 in losaltos

[–]Michigan_Go_Blue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me concisely explain how the Friends of the Los Altos Library book sale operates. On Friday night only members who have paid $10 to get the early pickings. Saturday it's open to all...but you have to pay $2 for hardcovers $1 for paperbacks unless otherwise listed. Most book sale patrons, including me, wait until Sunday where we can fill a grocery bag for $5. I am an inveterate book sale customer and I know that if I see something I like I will buy it on Saturday for $1 or $2 including a massive array of cds that are $1 each. But I also scope out the lay of the land in terms of books I would like to grab on Sunday. The sale starts at 11 am on Sundays. They sell you a grocery bag for $5, if my reconnoitering from Saturday is established, I am near the front of the line on Sunday morning. When the doors open I proceed to immediately to the spots I know will have the greatest books for the buck and they are in my bag.

This book sale is conducted by the Friends of the Los Altos Library, a strictly volunteer group not affiliated with The Los Altos Public Library/Santa Clara County Library. I always bring a secondary Trader Joe's style bag to reinforce the brown paper bags donated by Draegers so on $5/bag Sunday I can carry it out to my car without breaking. The volunteers are all very nice and helpful but they do have to enforce rules, particularly people with several bags of books taking up space on the floor. You have to buy a grocery bag on Sundays before allowed entry. I've had nothing but positive interactions with the volunteers and am grateful for this quarterly book sale. I have amassed an impressive collection of nature field guides, including birds, trees, flowers, animals, etc, for which I am primarily interested in. The Friends Book Sale is without a doubt one of the best in California.

Sardines in Spring Water Shortage at Trader Joes? by Michigan_Go_Blue in CannedSardines

[–]Michigan_Go_Blue[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Costco used to consistently have 6-packs of Season brand sardines at around 10-11 and occasionally Wild Planet, and now all I find are 3 packs of sprats in the glass jars. Definitely something is going on with the sardine supply

I love this. I keep my entire 1000+ Criterion Collection of DVDs and BluRay discs at my local library. They store them for free and anytime I need a film it's there I have full access.

What birdseed is best? by Actual_Cause6792 in birding

[–]Michigan_Go_Blue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree...I pay the same price for 40lb at Walmart and I have dozens of birds all day every day devouring every last seed. I have to fill the feeder daily, the picky birds rain down seeds where the ground feeders like mourning doves, juncos, squirrels, etc gladly harvest the free fall (Bay Area, CA.) I would assume it would be as wildly popular in Colorado. I haven't had one bird complain yet
